Good evening gents. Wowzers, long time since I posted in motors.
I'm flirting, a little, with the idea of a weekend toy. I don't think going full on hardcore Westfield etc would suit me, but certainly two seats and RWD is ticking my boxes. Sorta loosely thinking of £18k/£19k ish, and sort of loosely thinking Boxster/Cayman.
In respect of the Cayman/Boxster - I'm unclear on what MY the fabled bore scoring could be a potential issue? A google doesn't seem to provide a clear answer at what year car you're in the safe zone, so to speak. Is there a particular model year where the problem was solved at factory level?
If £18k can't get me out of the danger zone with bore scoring then I'll likely just look for something else, than a Porsche. I know of course it's likely overblown etc, and I could get an inspection done, warranty etc, but I'm just trying to ensure I don't get myself landed with a lemon.

Yeah, 2009 brought the DFI engines into the 987 Gen 2 as well - 2.9L replaced the 2.7 and a new 3.4 in the 'S'. Should be able to get one of the former for that budget with the usual myriad of Porsche options to suit your preferences

Coming up to 4 years with my 911.
Had a minor service along with fresh air conditioning condensers, front grille mesh, low temperature thermostat and replacement starter wiring loom. Lovely clean MOT and I’m ready to go for another year! I can't believe I didn't have the hot start issue sorted straight away. It's made such a difference.
COVID-19 has meant a paltry 500 miles between MOTs this year (did 800 on the pushbike for goodness sake!). This will increase next year for sure due to a change in job location.
I can’t thank Zuffenhaus enough for their attention to detail and work on the car. It’s in great hands! I still felt excited walking up to the car and realising that it was mine!

Lovely looking car @tom_nieto. Not sure how you've done so few miles this year! I got my car at the end of Sept. and I've done 1500 miles of which probably half of them was taking it for pointless drives early on weekend mornings on good driving roads.
It's awesome how many fantastic independent Porsche specialists there are in the UK. It does suck that you have to get a car serviced by an OPC if you have a Porsche extended warranty, but at least you can use them for brakes, suspension etc.

@thewanted How do independent Porsche specialists compare pricewise to Porsche for routine repairs and major service work?

Most are pretty transparent about their pricing online. Suffice to say my Indy is much better value and offers an excellent customer service. They actually love and drive the cars themselves so it’s much more interesting to turn up and have a chat.
For example a minor service is £200 and a major with brake fluid change is £470. For just annual servicing it’s not been far off our other regular cars. The added advantage is not paying the OPC prices for parts.
Do any of you have a non-porsche warranty? Ive currently got a porsche extended warranty which is up in march and considering the options. iirc the porsche one is nearly 1k per annum which isnt bad value tbh. Im wondering if theres a 90% as good alternative which covers the 'big' bits. Im also looking at indies, as the service is due in march too.

I think the general consensus is go Porsche or don’t bother. That’s a reflection of how good the Porsche one is rather than how the others are lacking. It’ll depend on the model you have (Red 991 GTS or am I getting mixed up?) as well and whether you want to make any non manufacturer approved alterations.

Thats a shame as I think now its turned 5 im probably best putting it into the hands of a good indi who can look after it but want the reassurance if i get a PDK issue or the like. Ill probably get a quote from the OPC and see what its like nearer the time. It had its major service and plugs last time so shouldnt be too bad tbh.

I don’t know how reliable PDK is and how much warranty work gets done on them. It’s probably worth calling your nearest independent specialist and talking to them. My understanding is that the 991 is proving to be quite reliable. Zuffenhaus are always very reassuring whenever I consult them about an issue and usually tell me to stop worrying and drive the car!
Sadly I think this decision relates more to resale value/ease, as a 5 year old car will be easier to shift with a warranty/OPC history IMO. For a 10 year old 997 I think the decision is swayed more towards an independent. Saying that, if you’re planning a long run with a good independent I don’t think you’ll put many people off... a 991.2 with a Litchfield tune and service history would be appealing!

I would have had to remove the parrot Bluetooth from my car to warranty for example! At least 2 new tyres, inspection, major service and the warranty cost and I figured I was halfway to an engine rebuild anyway.

I wouldn’t be moving that on! Awesome looking machine. I suppose as long as it’s relatively standard you could send it through a 111 point check prior to sale to satisfy anyone who really wants a warranty - I thought there was legislation that allowed you to claim on warranty even with independent servicing as long as it’s to the manufacturer schedule. Not sure if that applies to Porsche though.

@helpimcrap - 996’s aren’t getting any cheaper! At least you wouldn’t lose much on depreciation of you got another! Man maths needs to be rolled out here.

I had some nice long legal correspondence with them over that. The law as written should protect the consumer but Porsche basically told me to go procreate with myself and try and take them to court.
Had several solicitors agree with my interpretation however the costs to challenge Porsche were going to be astronomical.

@Dis86 - this and rampant flipping of GT cars is the real dirty side of the Porsche business (perhaps this is just a UK thing?). On the other hand the cars are fantastic, well priced and the warranty is one of the best out there. I get the impression that unless you regularly buy a brand new SUV you’re a second class citizen in the dealer network. Step in the huge selection of excellent independent specialists. I would actually be quite torn as to where to maintain a newer, just out of manufacturer warranty 911 after the excellent experience I’ve had with Zuffenhaus.

The thing to remember is that its only the original OEM warranty on the car which is subject to those EU block exemptions but theres hardly any point in going to an indie in the first few years anyhow especially when the whole car is warrantied. The extended warranties are not subject to those agreements and can contain pretty much whatever they want, including that the car must be serviced at a porsche centre. The agreement is basically an insurance policy. If I take my car out of the extended warranty I can also use an indie, but if I stay in the warranty then it definately needs servicing at an OPC. All or nothing deal, but I guess anything outside of std servicing but not consumable repairs like brakes etc can be done anywhere. pretty fine line.

Friend of mine is having a 996 turbo rebuilt at the mo. will be a flying machine. hybrid turbos and 4ltr rebuild. I could see me swopping for this kind of modern classic but hes 100k into it!

Working on the basis I know very little about Porsche cars, I'm considering buying one (very much a maybe) later in the year.
With a budget of £65K what would you buy from the Porsche range? Open to outright purchase Vs finance but the finance payments will come out of that £65K. Ideally, I'd like to try and keep as much equity in the car as possible - either to sell and save the cash or to sell on and by something equivalent.
