981 GT4 is the 'old' shape, 2016 cars, 3.8 engine.
718 came end of 2019, 4.0 engine.

Pros of 981

• Much better noise (like so much better I'd say don't get a 718 without 3k+ spare for an exhaust)
• Weightier controls (Steering clutch brakes all more feelsome, may be a con for some)
• Lower numbers (~600 UK cars vs ~1300 UK 718)
• The first GT product Cayman
• Lighter (1340kg DIN 981 vs 1455kg DIN 718)

Pros of 718

• OEM CarPlay (can be retrofitted to 981)
• More power (414hp vs 385hp in the 981, not noticeable on the road IMO but high speed on track 718 does slowly pull away)
• Lighter clutch/steering/brakes
• Better aero
• Slightly more modern appearance

If you're using it as a weekends / track fun car and really like driving, the GT4 is what you want. It you like cruising more and it will never see a track, I'd go for a 991.1 GTS. Don't bother with warranty just buy from a specialist / get inspected / maintained with a specialist like JZM RPM etc.

I’d definitely be in a 718 4.0 GTS for that money. Still a track weapon but great road car. Very compliant and nicer to drive than a 911 in my experience.

I spent the evening yesterday doing the "CC mod" to move my climate controls into one of the lower storage holes in my 996. What an utter **** job that was, my hands are far too big to be digging around behind the dashboard. Everything came apart and went back together again easily enough though, and now I have a nice big double-din sized space for fitting a new Android Auto head unit (and as an added bonus, everything still works too).

I took the opportunity to rip out an old parrot bluetooth kit at the same time. Whoever wired that in was a complete idiot - nothing was actually terminated. The wires were just wrapped together and covered in electrical tape. Given the age of the parrot model, it's probably been that way for 10-15 years though...

Now I need to pick a headunit though. toying with the idea of a Kenwood DMX5020DABS that shouldn't look too out of place.

I dragged my heels a lot considering my last update was in October, but I finally got around to swapping the HU recently and fitted a Kenwood 8021DABS.

A few action shots. The first photo after cutting out the old single DIN size and fitting the bracket for a double DIN:

I need to spend some time adjusting the face plate and need to decide whether to fit the GPS sensor or not (and probably won't bother, as Android Auto covers 99% of my driving) but very happy with the outcome.

Anyone driven both a 981 and 981 s? Some say the 2.7 isn't enough and others say it's better as you can rev it out all the time, that old classic. Just wondering what everyone else thought. Also please state if it was PDK or manual.

I haven’t but the NA nature of the engine means you’re gonna have to rev it out a lot.

My 3.4 requires 4K RPM before much happens.



If you want a weekend only car, I can see how the 2.7 would be better.


As a daily, the 3.4 will be better suited to road use and is easier to find in high spec



Though PDK will help a fair bit anyway with road use.

More desirable car. The 992 Touring is really just an options pack not a different model. 991 was much lower numbers and had more touring specific stuff, also I think the 991 just looks better as a touring whereas the 992 looks better with the wing.

The 991 prices are all over the place, some for <£150k, some at almost £200k. I doubt the ones at the top end are selling readily.

Quick update on the braking noise I was hearing on the gts.. It's gone!

Had a good look at the brakes but couldn't see anything anywhere and on the next drive, silent braking. Must've been a stone somewhere in the metalwork around the brake but it's been thrown out. Bizarre!

Now you say that but I was in Solihull Porsche earlier today and they do a free health check service where you can be shown round the car, underneath etc with checks to tyres, brakes etc. Booked up until June but still, worth mentioning for anyone near Solihull.

Its servicing which must be done under the extended warranty by an OPC. Repairs, so long as they use porsche approvide parts can be done anywhere; and for consumables like brakes/discs/AC condensers there is no way for them to tell.
