Porsche Taycan 4S: Driven

trying to figure out what tesla this is up against ? the s or roadster ? it has to be the s .. but the s beats it on range and cost ?
and looks better more rounded .. and smooth

It is only "up against" the Model S because they are both electric cars and are vaguely similar (saloon/saloon-esque etc). That is about where the similarity ends. The Model S has more range and is cheaper - yes. But the Taycan is on another planet in terms of both the way it drives and in build quality. This drives as you would expect a Porsche to drive whereas the S is a little bit all over the place. The build quality of the Taycan is absolutely phenomenal, seriously impressive how well put together it is and how well thought out it all is. I think you could put the Taycan up against pretty much any other car from any other marque and it wouldn't be embarrassed.

It’s mission E. Being considered as competing with a Tesla is a disservice the the Taycan attributes. It’s operating in a space that’s been massively accelerated by Tesla though that’s for sure! Fast EVs.

Did you consider a test drive back to back, against a lighter petrol porsche on your favourite windy road ? worth a weekend away, to a good dealer,
after being reminded of Monacco's col de turini, col d'eze, in TDF last week.

Rumoured, lighter 2wd may be interesting, is battery capacity as important in a sports car

ok top of the line taycan ..£190k without extras .. tesla roadster £190k all in .. so your saying just because it's a Porsche it's better ?
and the tesla s is a family car so will be a little wet to drive .. while the taycan is supposed to be a sports car .. just don't see the overall difference .. as with ev it comes down to distance and price ..

He saying the car is better irrelevant of badge. Not really sure why the Tesla is being talked about really. The Taycan is a replacement for the panamera isn’t it. Just happens to have a different power train.

If you're only judging an EV on distance and price, you're probably not the target market for the Taycan.

Just because a cars drivetrain is electric, doesn't mean that everything else that ever set cars apart is null and void - interior quality, external styling, driving dynamics etc. etc.

Dude, only one of those exist. Keep it on the dartboard.

The Taycan S sits lower in the Porsche product line up trim/power level and hence doesn’t have the badge. Porsche buyers would recognise this.

My 486DX2 66Mhz PC also never had a turbocharger for its 75Mhz turbo mode.

Taycan really has nailed it from that Mission E concept.
I do think the taycan having turbo on it is a bit daftz however seeing as most of not all of Porsches range are turbo and it's only the top ones that have the badge on I can see why they've done it.

Nice write up DRZ , thanks for a real world test .

Love the Taycan - if it was as good as you say imagine the Turbo S version - insane ,

Both being BEV’s I’ll be keeping an eye out of residual values on this and the Tesla S specifically, they are both at a similar price point at entry level. Just not sure how a three year old battery only car will fair long term .

Porsche has Turbo on the car because it was a Turbo...

The reason Ludicrous mode exists is to take the pee (and Spaceballs). The point is for people who take it too seriously, like it is important, when its not.
That seems ridiculous to me; it is important. It's one of the most important things when you're engineering and purchasing a fast car. Let's not forget that Porsche are German and Germans don't do humour, especially when it comes to engineering.

To use your own argument against you, then it doesn't matter that Porsche uses the Turbo badge, as it's now denoting that it's fastest flagship models have the Turbo badge.

That is my point the badge is meaningless, hence past tense 'was' in my original statement. Pretty obvious if you read it as written.

As for humourless Germans, one of my best pals is German he is possibly one of the most funny people I know, and he is an engineer!

I can't understand how people don't realize that they keep the Turbo moniker at the top as a continuity thing. Having been in a couple of Model S, as well as watching a number of reviews on EV's, I think it would be fair to say that Tesla only wow the car people who aren't interested in/understand the engineering and just like the upfront figures. The Taycan won't have knocking suspension (rear on a number of Model S which is 'normal') or IMO a meh interior for the price. Plus, it'll drive like a Porsche.
