Damn just threw this out at work, if you had a lorry and a few meters of room on your roof im sure you could have had it! (It only leaked a little..)

I installed a split in my room a few years ago and keeps my room nice and cool, not so bad now as my pc in not in there any more.

awesome basement dude what else you got in there?

We have 4 of these in the basement + pumps, Dry air coolers on the roof.

Plus various air cooled and water cooled screws and recip chillers.

We have 4 Frick screws which run @ -48c and -24c in the ETL (run and standby) these are around 8mw with all at full load.

Plus Frick screw Ammonia plant and smaller plant running on R507.

I got a cheap Homebase one 3 years ago now (for just under £200) - it gets used literally for 1 or 2 weeks a year, but I'm glad I have it. This one I think... In fact I'm just used it for the first time today. I had planned to store it in the loft when not being used but it weighs a flippin' ton!

+ My PC is in the 2nd bedroom which gets the sun from midday until sunset. Even keeping the blinds closed it'll get to the high 20s and in the summer opening the window just lets equally warm air in. Combine that with switching the PC and monitor on and you either put up with sweating, or buy aircon!
+ You can also really notice the lack of humidity when it's been running.
+ I run it for an hour before going to bed and it helps me sleep on those rare hot summer nights.

- Uses a lot of electricity - about 700-800 watts when cooling, and about 100 when just blowing the fan.
- It's noisy when cooling too - I had planned to get 1 in each bedroom to run overnight but I doubt I could sleep when it clicks on and off.
- It doesn't cool things THAT much - in a 4x5 metre room it'll only really get it down to 22 or 23oC. But in fact that's fine in the summer when it would seriously be 30-something otherwise.
- You have to open the window about 6 inches to let the exhaust hose out. I'm looking at running it into the loft instead and just did a search on google which funnily enough brought me to this thread :D

GrimbsyLAD
Nope :D

Must be nice in the winter though :p

I had to go into the plant room at Manchester Airport a few years ago and that was around 30c, absolute sweat box :(

got mine running into the loft, various opinions when searching same saying damp lofts mold etc, but my loft gets condensation in the winter so i would have thought the risk is miniscule, also there are air vents in the eaves so the air should eventually go out there anyway

Portable air condition works well in small room (not over 10 sqm). When I move it to larger room (around) 20 sqm, it's cool only air flow direction. This year I plan to install window a/c unit at that room (the smaller room still use portable unit). If you're finding portable unit, this site http://www.thegoodgears.com/Portable-Air-Conditioner/ is good for top models idea.
