I decided it might be a good move to turn my spare 8gb usb drive into a portable apps drive, as im always fixing pc's some of those virus filled machines don't like things installed.

I will have a look around the web, but is there any set way you do this? do you need a set program installed first? if so any recommendations? as i was just gonna try portableapps.com/ and follow the guide on that

I use a few from portableapps.com but I don't use their launcher, the portable apps you download just extract to a folder and you can run the exe from there.

As someone who doesn't really use them - how do people update their portable apps? Is it just a case of remembering to download a newer version and replacing what is on your stick?

And who compiles them? Portableapps.com?

For updating portable apps , in firefox I just grab the latest version and re-install over the earlier one.

They are handy indeed , I have one folder on my PC were I stick all my apps and then
I can run those apps for any of the 3 different win OS's I have

VERY handy, though I stopped using the frontend software as some people's machines with AV on complained about it and tried to disinfect a benign program.

getting to grips with it, quite simple, just peeded off that malwarebytes is a no go, as that is by far the best app for sorting out a pc with any unwated programs

I quite like portable stuff, in fact a lot of apps are portable if you tinker with them a bit. I really like having winISD and hornresp on a USB stick, which I can use on any windows box...
