Im thinking of buying a portable external hard drive.

Seen 1 or 2 im intrested in.

I read a comment tht someone had mentioned on another site, saying that USB3.0 Is pointless for portables due to it not having its own dedicated power supply.

Is this true?

he also stated the performance on a USB3 portable would be on par or just a little better then a USB2.0

Thoughts on this?

USB3 provides power, in fact it provides more than USB2 (900mA @ 5V compared to 500mA with USB2). That's ample for most 2.5" HDDs without the need for a Y cable.

Performance will be dependent on the drive in the enclosure but pretty much any modern 2.5" HDD will be throttled by USB2. With USB3 you should get the full drive speed.
