Portable "Gaming" Laptops - Suggestions

Just found the Sony Vaio S, looks like it fits the bill pretty well!

i7 quad,
8GB+ RAM
1080p 15" IPS display
640M GPU (Admittedly it's the LE version, which is a lower clocked version of the normal 640M, however there's some pretty good and safe BIOS mods to take it up to, and well past normal speeds)
Pretty good battery life
And it's less than 1" thick

Comes in at around £1,100 for that spec (with student discount). Sounds pretty good!?

I've just ordered the 13.3" of that, would have gone for the 15" but fancied something more portable. You can order the same spec apart from the screen too.

Yeah seems like a lovely bit of kit. GPU is a bit on the weak side being the LE version, but the BIOS hacks that are around take it up to, and well beyond the 650M speeds!

There doesn't seem to be much else in a 13" or 15" that can match them for spec. The new XPS models do, but they seem to be absolutely plagued with throttling and wifi issues which are really putting people (myself included) off of buying them sadly.

Edit - Also, do you mind me asking what your expected dispatch/delivery date is?

Check out ************, i am also going to uni in september, it is where i will buy my one from.

Yeah I've had a look on there, some very nice and powerful laptops, but nothing that can quite compete with the power/size of the Dell/Sony unfortunately.

Thats where i got mine from, think you may have broken the forum rules though......

As far as I know we're okay discussing shops like those as they're not OcUK's direct competition. Down to the mod's discretion though I guess. But also it might be worth remembering not to quote somebody you think is breaking the rules ;).

Check the XPS15 thoroughly on notebookreview as quite a few people are complaining about the wifi and some other issues.... I have an XPS17 and it rocks but gfs card not as good as you require and fairly heavy. Portable desktop really.

They build custom pcs as do ocuk, how are they not direct competition?

Pass. I'm just going by what I've heard/seen on here before, and that the mods don't seem to delete mentions of them at all.

Yeah that's what put me off buying one already. The GPU and CPU both throttle massively under any heavy use, making the performance of the laptop completely wasted. The WiFi issue is a whole separate story, but together they're currently putting a lot of people off the laptop it seems!

I can't quite remember, but the guy on the phone said around 2-3 weeks

Thanks :)

They're offering the sheet battery as a free upgrade at the moment as well, works out nicely if I keep the cheapest RAM and HDD options, then upgrade them with parts from elsewhere.

As do Dell / Alienware but there doesn't appear to be an issue mentioning them here.

I have always put it down to the fact that OCUK's laptop lineup is relatively weak as they arn't really competing in that area (and definately not in the custom build sector).

Anyway depending on budget I would be looking at the Optimus III.

Quad core i7, GT650M, 1080p 15.6" screen and all the usual gubbins. Clevo chassis so plenty of support out there too.

All of that comes in around £750.

My personal choice though would be the Inferno (11.6") model as I just love the tiny laptop, massive power setup it has.

Budget wise I'm happy up to around £1,500 if the laptop is worth it. The optimus has the hardware, but it's nearly twice as thick as the Sony/Dell counterparts. The Sony/Dell are around 23mm (off the top of my head), whereas the Optimus is just over 40mm. Really I'm looking for something as thin as possible with that sort of hardware and a 14 or 15inch screen.

The annoying thing is that the new MacBook seems to fit the bill perfectly! Does anyone know how well they work day to day using windows 100% of the time?
