The battery on my trusty old SmartDisk FlashTrax FTX20 has finally given up, it won't hold a charge and a replacement will be around the £50 mark as far as I can tell so I fancy an upgrade.

I wondered if anyone had any suggestions on a replacement ?

I quite like the look of the Vosonic XS Drive Super VP8360, it has quite a few features that might be nice on a day out - radio, movie player etc. Perhaps I am trying to convince myself there ;)

I have seen the 160Gb version for £220 which seems quite good in comparison.

TIA.

Hyperdrive Space - backs up a full 133x Lexar 2GB card in 1 minute 45 seconds. I could not find a supplier in the UK and had to import from the US. Very fast and reliable with some decent features. Bought the empty chassis and installed an 80 GB Hitachi 7200RPM drive in it.

It does not have any fancy players on it for movies etc and to be honest its just a backup dedicated device.

Sorry to bump an old one but my question is exactly the same as the OP, 3 years later.

Anyone recommend any handy devices?

Err...

The Subject is about portable storage and backup but the OP is asking about a video player.

For a portable USB drive, I strongly recommend NOT buying WD. I have bought a dozen or so in the past but in the new ones, they hack the driver to give you a vitual CD with their crap software as well as the drive you bought. You can't get rid of it, not even with a format. They also hack the reported capacity to make it seem that it doesn't take any space. It is a form of root kit - I'll never buy from them again.

I'll try LaCie next time.

For CF cards. I swear by Sandisk Extreme IV 45Mb/s. Today, I was shooting 4x4 trials. One of the cars looked like he was going to reach the top of the almost unobtainable peak of the hill. I filed the buffer as he powered up the hill. Then, with the camera locked, he tipped backwards to roll end-over-end. The card was fast enough to clear the buffer and catch two frames with the car pointed skywards - shot of the day.

My mate bought a LaCie (think it was 80gb) and took it with him for a tour of Iraq. Heat, dust and all sorts of knocks failed to disrupt it in the slightest. Decent products.

I have a Thecus Nano N1050 caddy, bought a 250gb HDD for it. Transfer speeds are pretty decent and comes with a pouch and small battery pack that you can put AA batteries in if need be so you can use it on the move. Works great as a standard portable USB Drive and also works as well when transferring photo's from a camera directly onto it without the PC
