Portal Problem :(

hi all!

I just got a new 6950 ati card so when i put it in, i did a fresh install of win7!

since then ive played crysis 2 and badcompany 2 no probs there!

however today i went and downloaded portal on steam to replay it before the next one, and when i try to run the game i get 2 errors

the first one pops up before the game boots and says 'CEF initialization error' and the error message is 'Failed to load required icudt42 Library'

so i can click on there, and the game boots, the little valve ad pops up and while its then loading the game menu, an error noise can be heard, the game freezes. i then alt tab out and the error says 'Portal:HL2.exe - bad image' and theres a big error message which basically says C:\portal\bin\mssmp3.asi may not be compatible with my version of windows, and i should try to reinstall the game (which ive tried)

earlier i managed to click ok on this message and alt tab back to the game and it ran fine then crashed a bit later :(

if anyone could offer help/advice would be great :D

Have you tried verifying the game cache?

Edit: Just saw you have already re-installed.

as above yea reinstalled once!

and yea did the cache thing and also tried defragmenting the cache files :(

really odd, all the other source games run well!

Only a small guess, but as you have only just downloaded it and as you have a recent GPU, then maybe an auto-update will start sometime soon. A bit of an outside chance but I had a similar thing once with Steam + old game + new hardware and it did just that:)
