I played it years ago but never finished it (I must have been close though).

Last week I installed it again and ran through it in a couple of plays. I finished it yesterday and I just thought I'd put a thread up to say wow! - What a different, intelligent game. A refreshing change and it doesn't look too dated. It worked flawlessly with the 360 pad too.

Many people said the game was too short but to be honest I thought the length suited the type of game. I wonder if the gun will make an appearance in HL3 (or HL2: Episode 3)?

If you haven't given it a try then I'd highly recommend it.

Im in the same boat as you, Played it a while ago on the 360 and just got it today on the PC (Mainly for cinematic mod) and I'm still loving it.

Good thing about the PC version is you can download more levels, Which should keep me going forever.

That sounds fun. Could you tell me more?

Not really! You'll have to google it i'm afraid. Somebody here will know what it's called. It basically just lets you play through EP2 with the Handheld Portal Device. Check youtube for videos.

It might do.. The stories are definitely linked, as there's an Aperture Science ship in HL2:EP2.

They're linked by more than just that ship. Aperture Science has featured in the Half Life universe since the first game back in 1998.

Portal 2 is confirmed. It wouldn't make sense to remove the Handheld Portal Device from the Portal series into the Half Life one if they're planning to extend the Portal series by itself.

I'm not saying it wont happen, I just don't think it will. Aperture Science still has a role to play but i doubt the ASHPD is one of them.

Edit:
Also, it's never been confirmed that Portal took place during the events of Half Life 2, and although GlaDos makes references to how the "world has changed since you last went outside" and that she's the only thing between "us" and "them", it doesn't go any deeper than that. Plus I'm not sure of the time between Half Life 2 and Half Life 1, since GlaDos was built in response to Black Mesa's portal research, the Aperture Science Enrichment Centre would have needed to have been abandoned for a long time before Portal took place (if it were set during the events of HL2)

So... they might be different times entirely, and thus the portal gun unavailble in Half Life due to time frames.

I've just checked out some videos, it does look fun. I'll have to give it ago if I ever get through my backlog of games.

cheers, i take it this is differant to the flash game port?

very different, its like normal portal but much harder levels, you also need to own the original portal to play this.

I thought the way it was set out was that Black Mesa and Aperture Science were rival companies. Its unlikely they were at the same time but all that really means is that the technology for the ASHPD was lost when GlaDOS went crazy, to be found again for whatever reason in the Borealis. Who knows tbh :p

I completed this the first time 2 days ago and the HL episodes just before. Absolutely loved it, better than Episode 2 IMO (and of course Ep1, but that was pants).

The ending is especially good, and it's just the right length. If they'd made it any longer the puzzles would have had to get harder and more frustrating.

And to me what GlaDOS says implies is that it happens just after Half-Life 1. This maybe explains the complete lack of human presence and given the chaos no complicated explanation is necessary for why nobody found the Portal gun.

Yes Portal still stands out as one of the crowning achievements in gaming history, intriguing gameplay mixed with a simple but entertaining narrative and the best song in a game ever. And Portal & Half-Life are on a collision course, it's the whole reason Gabe Newell asked the Narbacular Drop team to come join them, so they could integrate their concept into the Half-Life universe.
