We've been in Vancouver for about 4 and a bit weeks now and at the weekend we finally managed to get hold of a rental car and take a trip outside of the city. We headed North to Squamish and stopped at lots of places on the way, I thought I'd share my photos from a place called Porteau Cove, which is about a 40 minute drive from where we're living in downtown.

Not sure on this next one, a 10 stop ND was used, but for some reason it just looks a bit weird, the rocks under the water seem a bit blurry.

I can't wait to get back that for sunrise/sunset one weekend!

Stunning pictures, in particular the first one. So many things right about it (composition, leading lines, processing...)

A lovely set of a beautiful location, particularly like the shots of the lake without the jetty's in. You definitely need to get out of the city more often!

On the first ND one it's because of the diffraction of the water. The water looks reasonably still but not static in your short exposures so I imagine it's a result of the waves moving over the rocks but bending the light as they go over it, making the rocks underneath blurry. I'd probably get lower down to avoid seeing through the water at all in a situation like that.

Ah that makes sense. I was hoping for much longer exposures, but I was only able to get around 50 second as it was so bright out. I definitely want to return when the sun is going down so I can get some good shots with 2-3 minute exposures.

I miss Canada ! I got flights from Whistler > Phantom lake, was spectacular, saw garibaldi and that flat mountain etc..

yep.
I wouldn't use an ND filter here though, no need. Well, I would probably use an ND-grad and try to get more sky definition and a more even exposure.

The whole long exposure seascapes have really been done to death over the last few years and although the effect is sometimes nice (creating a misty ethereal feel) it is often more disappointing.
It removes the details form the waves but to me that is some of the most interesting parts of the scene - i am fascinated with the way waves move and the myriad of patterns and colours generated, especially at sunrise or sunset. When ona beach I can watch the ocean for hours.
