I'm looking to get a new contract with Orange rather than an upgrade due the better deal available as a new customer, but I want to keep my existing number.

Could I port my number to a 30 day contract with another operator, say Tesco, then port it back to Orange on the new contract?

I see no reason why you couldn't just request your PAC code, cancel your current contract, and then start another using the PAC code. It shouldn't be necessary to go to another operator.

Port on port off is how you'll have to do it, or so I was told by T mobile last year

Yeah I think you can just move it to an Orange PAYG sim and then back across to your new contract. It's also much quicker. I'm not even sure that you need a PAC code to do it.

Edit: It might not be quicker if they have a minimum time that you have to spend on PAYG. I think Porting to another network would be a safe bet.

you can't port within network to avoid upgrade fees etc, they're not that stupid. You'd need to change networks which is possible but time consuming and a PITA, I expect if you port on and off a PAYG deal you'll either have to pay or be connected for 30 days or some other spurious technicality.
