Portsmouth Speed limit reduced to 20mph

that bothers me as much as the 70mph limit on motorways.

I allways have and allways will drive at a speed suitable for the conditions.

I will slow down for police and speed cameras obviously and this is genuinly the only times I look at my speedo, its all about the rev counter baby ;)

Really ? i dont think ive ever been as slow as 20 mph :o on any road regardless of the limit. I usually just stick to the 30 if im going past a school unless all the kids are coming out etc

Sam

Then you go at 80. :D

Sam

What about if you have to stop at traffic lights, or a crossing?

:D

This is the same City which brought you a 50mph limit for the entire length of the 3 lane M275 MOTORWAY.

Nice.

Its actually 60mph for the majority of the M275, slowing to 50 for half a mile or so near the city centre. According to the local paper it's been done because they're installing a new junction half-way down the motorway and they don't consider 70 to be a safe speed. They've lowered the speed limit before starting the work to get people used to it. Thats the council's story anyway!

What you need to bear in mind is that the M275 is one of only two routes on and off of Portsea island. When there's an accident on the M275, the knock-on effect across the whole of Portsmouth is severe, as shown last year when there was a fatality during the early afternoon on the outbound M275. Portsmouth came to a standstill, and many people were stuck until late in the evening. It took me until 9PM to get home from Southampton.

As for the blanket 20 limit across Portsmouth..what a joke!! It will benefit some areas such as the top of our road, where someone gets run over on the zebra crossing at least once a month, but there are so many roads where 20 will be so inappropriate.

Andy

I would really like to see some statistics from accidents last year on this because everyone at work agree's 20mph is ridiculous, and yet that councillor reckons everyone 'right of mind' will agree with him

So driving around in 3rd gear is someones idea of reducing polution

3rd gear?

dunno about you but my car will confortably do 20mph in 1st..

well, when i say comfortably i mean comfortably for the engine & drivetrain, the noise it makes at that rev range (about 4k rpm at a guess) is enough to wake the dead :D

i can't imagine that many performance / tuned cars wont do 20mph in first, albeit rather loudly..

how utterly pointless, cue more accidents due to people spending more time concentrating on the speedo more than the road, who on earth thinks of these ideas?

They have been extending speed limits around my area for no reason other than it gives more laybys to park the scamera vans in (previously national speed limits changed to 40mph), this is just a step further :(
