Schumacher had to fight his way up through the field and even then had to fight the Ferrari before it became dominant which didn't come till 2001. There were plenty of times when he won the championship where he was in the inferior car. 1994,1995,2000 I would argue. Hamilton with the exception of 2009-2011 has had a championship winning car for all his seasons and the dominance of Mercedes in F1 is something that has never been seen before.
I'd argue that in '17 and '18 the Mercedes wasn't the best car on the grid. Just look at where Bottas was with that car. The difference was that Mercedes had Hamilton and Ferrari only had Vettel. 2008's McLaren was also second best.
The only reason that '94s Benetton didn't win the WCC was the disqualification from two races, losing a 1st and a 2nd place, and being forced to sub in the mediocre JJ Lehto for two races. Without Michael getting those disqualifications and a two race ban he would have been totally dominant. In '95 Herbert picked up two wins in the sister car, and Benetton won the WCC. Not really convinced that they weren't the car to be in for either of those years.
