Hello

I'm currently use Virgin Media for my ISP and when carrying out a speed test directly through their modem I'm getting 120+Mbps down and 11Mbps up.

I recently ordered, received and setup an Asus RT-N66U router.

All went well until I carried out a series of speed tests. I'm getting around 90Mbps down and 11Mbps up.

I reconnected straight to the modem again and and speeds increased to 120+Mbps down and 10+up.

Do I have a faulty Asus RT-N66U, or is this loss of speed to be expected?

Thank you.
Ian.

Are you connecting to the router using wireless or cables?
If wireless try changing the channels it broadcasts on as congestion on the channels can slow down your throughput.

It's what I'm thinking, maybe the wan interface is running at 100mbs and reason for the 90mbs speed test.

It's running with the latest official firmware 3.0.0.4.260. If I try to update it tells me I have the latest.

How can I determine if the connection between the modem and the router is running at 1000Mb/s? Is there some test I should run?

Thank you.

Obviously the firmware checking function is useless. I've downloaded and applied the firmware now.

It's currently pointless me testing again at the moment as my connection speed has just dropped through the floor. *Sigh* I'll take another look tomorrow.

The web interface should tell you. Have a look for Internet status.

On the Network Map page of the router settings there is an Internet Status section but it only specifies:

  • Connection Status: ON
  • Connection Type: Automatic IP
  • WAN IP
  • DNS
  • Gateway
  • Lease Time
  • Lease Expires

Alas nothing about speed :(

Hi KIA

I've checked the ports where the network cables are plugged in on the modem and on the router and there no LEDs :(

Blimmey that sounds complicated.

Is that the only way to determine the speed?

click on the tools tab and at the bottom of the page it should show your port speeds under Network section. (currently running Merlin's latest build so not 100% it is there on stock fw)

Hello Rensin

I'm beginning to feel very thick. I've checked the settings and simply cannot find a Tools tab. As a reminder this is what the stock firmware looks like:

I hope this helps.

HIGHLY recommend the merlin firmware - its awesome and adds more functionality to your router.

WARNING: Stay away from the latest 354 based firmware as its still BETA from asus - it severly borks the 5Ghz wireless channels.

I just ordered one of these routers myself in anticipation of my plusnet fibre connection being fitted on the 13th of this month. Hopefully i havent made a bad choice as it seems that some people here are having issues with their routers.

Anything i should be aware of when setting it up??.

It was really easy to setup. If I can do it anybody can.

The only issue I'm having is that I'm not getting the same speed through the router as I am directly from my cable modem. I'm taking a 30Mbps hit for some reason.
