I am one believer that you should not speed but earlier this afternoon I was pulling out of a street onto another (the road I was coming from was a residential so safe to say the limit would be 30mph on the road I was coming from) right at this junction where I was turning onto this new road to the left is country lane so this is the national speed limit. On this occasion I was turning right. I have always assumed that this road is 40MPH, the road has no clear signs from the point of where I pulled out neither all the way down to the bottom of the hill (where the speed camera van was) if I seen the signs stating it was 30mph I would have gone at that speed.

My question is, because they was no clear signs from the point I joined the road and even right up to the camera van do I have a leg to stand on?

It was only when I went past the van I decided to turn around and check for signs which they is a sign which states 30mph but this was placed at the start of the country lane facing totally the wrong way to me when I was at this junction ready to pull out. So they is no clear signs stating 30mph for going down the hill.

First time ever been caught but I now know this road is a 30 zone. I have took some pictures just in case.

FYI I was doing around 36 to 38.

You don't have any leg to stand on. A single carriageway should be assumed to be 30mph unless there are signs indicating otherwise.

But I thought that if the police want to use a mobile speed camera van that they have to display the speed that is required for that road and also a sign which states 'Speed Camera' somewhere on that road?

Whilst I was taking my pictures, you could see they was catching a lot of people on this road.

If you were doing 36-38 on your speedo you may just be under the threshold for speeding as most cars over read your speed.

The speedo may say your doing 38 but in actual fact your only doing 34.

Think most police forces go by the 10% + 2 MPH rule, so you'd have to be doing an actual speed of 35 to get busted.

You pulled out of a road that was a 30 into another road which had no sign it to indicate a change in speed. Therefore if you were caught speeding you have no argument.

If the 2nd road was a 40 you'd have seen signs at the end of the 1st road telling you the limit was changing.

You might be ok, or as with myself you may get done for 34 in a 30 or similar.

Learned my lesson, always slow to 30 as soon as the sign says to regardless of its proximity to the pedestrian area.

Not been caught since (due to not doing it again).

Suppose I should accept I got caught and not a leg to stand on! Sure I will know within the next 2 weeks...

Was the road Gartree road? As they've just recently turned it from national speed limit to 30mph and have mobile speed camera signs at the beginning.

I've heard of people being done for 34mph before. I think it's just 10%, not 10%+2.

In related news: 12 days ago I passed a rozzer with a speed camera with my speedo reading 35 on a 30 road. No idea how much it over-reads or if it even over-reads at all. Just 2 days to go until I'm in the clear. If that NIP arrives in the next 2 days I will be so gutted. :p

The 10% + 2mph is not a rule but ACPO guidance. Safety Camera Partnerships are allowed to completely ignore it if they so wish.
