After buying my D5100 on the 16th July this year, I've noticed this three times now, with the latest occurance being tonight. Basically my battery discharges insanely fast when the battery level shows less than 3 (out of 3) on the LCD display. This isn't actually during use either, its when the camera is switched off but with the battery still inside the camera. Not sure if I should remove it after use every time?

As I said, this is the third time this has happened now with the battery being completely exhausted and not turning the camera on even though when I turned it off less than 2 hours ago, it still had 2 out of 3 bars left on its charge :S

The battery is the official one that came with the camera. Any ideas? Is this normal behaviour when leaving the battery inside the camera with it switched off?

As far as I know you have to try very hard to fully drain a Nikon battery as once it hits 1 bar left, it stops you using the camera all together, you cant even preview on the LCD...

As its a lithium battery I dont think the old decharging and recharging rule applys, a lithium battery should hold its charge for like 2 years if its turned off.

I would say its safe to say you have a battery fault

Sigh thats not good if thats true as the batteries aren't covered by the Nikon warranty, even though its not even a month old yet lol. The batter charging unit itself is covered but the battery isn't :(

Might take it back to the store I bought it from and see if they can do anything for me in regards to it.

If its not over a month old, take it back to the place you bought it,
I'm pretty sure they have to replace it under the sale of goods act (or summet)

They might have to exchange the whole kit but you should be covered

I've got an extended warranty with the firm also I got it from on the camera and the lens that came with it so we'll see. Bit disheartened though that this has happened, especially on my first DSLR -.-

well speak to the people you bought it of and just say your willing to exchange only the battery, if they refuse then tell them you want a full replacement,
I think your probably find they will exchange just the battery, especially if you have purchased additional warranty

Yeah probably, we'll see tomorrow as I'll pop into it then. I know the guy who sold me it and I've sent him a message saying I'll be in to see him.
