Possible DC2, or mayybbe... Purchase in 2-3 months..

Hey all, I know i've put in a few comparison queries over the last few months, but I think i've narrowed it down now that a DC2 may be the thing to go for, as a next car, i'm possily getting some cash in a month or 2 that should enable me to clear the finance on my Civic (54 plate, 1.6 Sport EP2) Which, as much as I like it etc etc.. is quite low powered and as Fox might say, a bit silly to have spent a large amuont on, via finance, so the plan is to try and sell it on/trade it in at some point, still unsure on its approx value now, and get something a tad cheaper but with more guts.

I had it down to an MK2 MR2 or an Integra Type-R DC2, but as my girlfriend has her MGF still, would be handy for one of us to have a 3+ seater just incase, and as we take her brother out sometimes.

I really prefer the look of the imports over the UKDM ones but I am aware that it bumps up price, and insurance, so i'm a bit tied on that, is it even possible to get UKDM converted with a good quality JDM front end? Or more to it than that?

Are there any specific signs to look out for? Any kind of mileage to try and keep below?

Hoping to be able to use it for trackdays one day as I should have a better and more stable income soon, so i'm really just after some advice :D

Whats the average MPG usually, with some town driving, bit of motorway and of course some b-road fun! :D is the back seat/boot very spacious at all? Servicing costs? :)

Just trying to get every piec of info I can to try and make my mind up and evaluate costs!

If anyone has a parkers membership/can find out used prices, could they try for a:

Honda Civic 1.6 Sport (2004) (54 plate)
21,000 miles

Thanks all, hoping to be in the 'teg club soon, would have loved to try for an MR2, but one day that'll happen, right now, more seats is good :D hehe, and its a car i've wanted for a long time! :)

Good choice ;)

I’d say you can actually pick up the 96JDM’s cheaper than most UK specs, it’s the JDM 98’s that hold the premium and also later low mileage UK plates. At the moment you can pick up a decent 96spec for 5 to 5.5k but given the choice id defiantly go for a good condition 98spec JDM. Insurance will be around £200 more or there abouts over the UK spec. I doubt it would be worth it doing a front end conversion as id imagine they are probably pretty expensive and you would be better off just getting a JDM to start with.

As for mileage just look out for cambelt change, regular services and oil changes every 6k at least along with decent quality oil. Cambelt change mileage varies depending on year, later ones are 72k iirc and earlier are around 50k(don’t quote me on that) the earlier ones also have service intervals every 6k while later ones are 9k. Get as many test drives as you can so you can get an idea of a good ‘un watch for worn engine mounts, bushes etc. Watch out for synchromesh issues in the gearbox (expensive to fix). As long has been services regularly and looked after I wouldn’t worry too much about mileage, just comes down to personal preference.

Don’t know exact MPG figures but £40 v-power can give me almost 300miles motorway driving but generally I get between 190-230 that’s some motorway and town driving with a fair bit of vtec chucked in.

Get registered on www.itr-dc2.com, loads of info and advice there.

If your intending to track it there are several Tegs for sale that should suit what your after and now seems a nice time to pick them up at good money.

Things like suspension dampers and bushes will neew refreshing every 60k at the most, shorter if your doing a lot of track work to ensure the car feels how it should but other than that theres not a lot that goes wrong. Guy here at work has 150k on his UK ITR his only issue is then synchro on fast 3rd to 4th changes, thats about the main concern.

Running costs are no worse than something like a Focus IME, just the extra insurance and being a bit more anal about good tyres. Not sure about servicing, I gave that game up a few years ago in preferance of DIY.

I've been looking into this and have been asking on some DC2 forums.
RE: JDM vs UKDM. Price wise, per year there isn't much in it. But a 96 JDM will be cheaper than a UKDM as they didn't appear until 98.
RE: Running costs. I've been told by every one that it's pretty cheap (considering what it is), and bar parts being a little more than a Ford for instance, it should be pretty cheap to keep on the road.

I was hoping to get a UKDM, but budget and time constraints mean that I'll probably have to miss out this time. :o

Good choice, had mine for about a month now and I still grin like a maniac when proding the right hand pedal and turning that wheel thing that sits infront of you.

JDM front end also needs a new bonet, bumper and headlights. Not worth it, just get the JDM car. JDM is lighter and has a better manifold so makes 200bhp instead of 189 of the Uk cara.

I just got 280miles from my last tank of fuel, which cost £40. Thats a good mix of motorway and back roads. Just on the motorway 300miles+ should be easy.

There is enough room in the back, I took my mum and dad out for a meal a few weeks back and I didnt have any complants. The boot actually pretty large too, about the same as the accord! The car overall is actually much bigger than you think.

Mate of mine is selling his 96spec for £4k to get a quick sale if your interested?

Good choice - I dont like Tegs but its clear its the right car for you :)

Spookily I agree. As much as I respect thier abilities, I'm not keen on the shape or of the DC5.

Look cracking good fun though.

Thanks for the input all, yeah the JDM is more appealing but obviously insurance and other costs might end up favouring a UKDM, i'll keep an open mind, and an open eye and see how things go, for sure :)

I think from what i've read, the '98 JDM spec is obviously the "sweetest nut" to go for, but i'll have to see whats around, the hard thing is finding somewhere to get a proper test drive what with dealers round here not wanting you to go far, and some private sellers are pretty wierd about that kinda thing thinking you'll thrash the living daylights out of it :(

Better head off before the gf slaps me! I'll be back later/tomorrow to source yet more info :D

Think this just got harder by looking for one without red seats :D

Still not sure on the full value to look at, seem to be a few '98 specs for £5.5k with around 90k on them, is that still a desirable kind of mileage on a car like this?

Also aiming for '98JDM/UKDM due to the ABS issue, which for some reason i'd rather have :p Is the central locking on 'tegs remote or key turn central locking? :) (Yes, i know, loads of questions)

Some examples, of possibility..

Your thoughts...teg-heads? :D

Most cars will have after market alarm systems, so remote. Think the standard was remote, may need to check that.

98 Spec for 5K will be a bit rough, at least 6.5 from what I can gather is needed for something decent.

The last one is for sale on the owners club, here:

Rust on the arches and a scuff on the bumper. Knock him down a few hundred at least to sort it. Other than that looks tidy.

Neil.

Ah, ok, thanks for the Neil, yeah now you mention it, I remember seeing that on the Owners Clubs this morning, but i've looked at so many ads today i've forgotten what was what to be honest!

I know the arch rust is easily enough sorted, but would that be a worrying sign of more to come in the not to distant future?

Nah, mine has a spot of rust where the rear bumper rubs against the bodywork. Easy fix as you say.

They all do it. Depends if it's done properly, had both sides of mine done and being red the whole quarter panel needed spraying to match.

Neil.

After having a look around, at sportyish FWD Coupes especially, i've had another option that for some reason I totally forgot about, FTO's..anyone with one care to enlighten me on thier experiences? Mostly with economy, reliability and rear seat space, i'm guessing the rear and boot might not be as spacious as an Integra from the sheer looks, but they can be decieving!

Fox, I'm sure i've seen you referring to an FTO somewhere as something in your family/you drive a bit, any enlightenment here? A big plus here is that they are looking a tad cheaper than Integras, although maybe harsher on the insurance side of things?
