Possible eBay nightmare unfolding

What a **** sandwich situation. It makes it worse when you sell something because you need to raise some much needed cash.

My general approach to ebay is to never sell anything which i'm not prepared to take a loss on. I try to sell locally first for expensive items for cash only and when I start getting messages from people enquiring about posting it then I rethink about if i'm prepared to post it out.

The pin looks pretty bent, and it's probably hollow looking at the crease in it, so will likely snap.

May as well replace the whole connection.

If you think its going to snap anyway, might as well have a go at bending it back...

I imagine it will be a solid pin like pretty much all these type of connections are.

Thanks for your help everyone. I will definitely try to bend it back, but will replace it myself if that doesn't work.

I agree that he did it, there's no way it go that bent when I last remove a card from it. I don't have a leg to stand on though unfortunately.

good luck with the pin bending. Just be super gentle and take it slow. Had to do this to a few cpu/cpu sockets in my time :p worst was the current design of Intel where the contacts are folded to be springy. Butt was clenched getting that one back into position.

Might I recommend using a thin wooden dowel, sharpens to a fine point :)

But yeah, guy Deffo got excited with his new tech and slammed the card in the wrong way.

Crap situation for you, maybe some rubbish got stuck on the end of his card before he inserted it. Next time just Gumtree it and save the hassle, sold as seen there and then!

Selling camera as desperate for funds...bets money on the horses :D

Haha, I should probably explain. Took advantage of a Bet365 deal on the England v Wales game (£50 risk free in play - you can guarentee a loss of no more than a fiver if you cover your bets elsewhere, but end up with £50 to bet risk free) and I won £425 off it, I withdraw about £375 of it and bet the rest on some football. Stuck £15 on horses last night, won, and withdraw most of it again.

As well as raising funds I also didn't use the camera any more :D

PS. But yes, I do admit that I shouldn't be gambling right now.

Might be worth recording yourself opening the box when you get it back. Just in case it is a different camera, you can prove to eBay it was the one returned to you.
Sounds like going overboard, but better to be safe than sorry I suppose.

Sorry I can't help with the thread, but just wanted to say its a shame you are selling all your gear. I haven't been in the photography section in a while but remember you posting some great pictures.

Hi all,

I just sold all of my camera gear on eBay (first mistake probably, I just thought it would be easier), including my Canon 5D2.

Camera was in great shape, boxed, with everything - I sent it yesterday and I get a message from the guy today saying that he put a card in the CF slot but it isn't being read and he cannot format it. He's checked the CF slot and says there's a bent pin and whether I've had this issue before.

Well, no, in the many years of ownership and even 1 week ago when I formatted a card in there, I have NEVER had this problem. He has it 5 minutes and suddenly it's broken.

I've asked him if it's one of the CF cards that I included in the auction or if it was his own and if he can send me a picture.

I feel like I'm screwed already, eBay always side with the buyer. It's not like I have pictures of inside of the CF card slot showing straight pins, so it's just my word against his. The camera was 100% working. I'm so annoyed about this, I sold it because I'm skint and I desperately need the money and now I feel like I'm going to be massively out of pocket.

Any advice?

That sucks big-time, Ebay is a repository for scum and scammers these days.

A friend of mine sold a laptop on Ebay a few years back, buyer paid, buyer signed for the laptop but never gave feedback, 3 weeks later he opens a dispute with Ebay claiming not to have received the laptop, my friend produced the digital signed for receipt, buyer claimed it was not his signature, Ebay took the money out my mates Paypal and my mate was out of pocket to the tune of a laptop. (£260)
He contacted the police to report theft - they didn't want to know.

I'd rather buy an electrical device from 'Crack Convertors' than use Ebay.

I read through this thread and thought i'd do a little experiment this morning. I have a 5D MKii. So attempted to put the card in the wrong way round. It's impossible, because the card will only go about a third of the way down the slot before it's stopped by a metal bump on the side of the slot. I'm not going to attempt to force it, but if i did the card would be very difficult to get out out again and would almost certainly damage the slot as well as any pins.
When your camera comes back OP, have a good look at the slot itself for signs of damage.

I suspect he put the card in the right way but something dropped in the slot first, maybe a small stone or similar. The card would have pushed it into the pins and bent them.

Yeah this.

Or he has bent them deliberately thinking he could get £140 quid and bend the pins back himself.
