I'm trying to work out if my PSU is on the fritz.
It's an OCZ Extreme 600w, non-modular. 72 amps over the 12v rail (more than the 55a required for 5770 crossfire)
It has two PCI-E connectors - numbered 1 and 2.
With one 5770 in, the PC will always boot when the number 1 PCI-E connector is used. When number 2 is used, the PC usually hangs at the windows loading screen. If it does load, I'll get a blue screen after just a few seconds.
I've tried adapting two 4-pins into PCI-E with the adapter that came with one of my GPUs, but it behaves just like the number 2 PCI-E connector.
In Crossfire, the PC will only load into windows if PCI-E 1 is plugged into the primary GPU (the top card with the display cables) and PCI-E 2 is plugged into the second 5770. However this will cause me to get random blue screens - sometimes after 15 seconds, sometimes after 5 hours.
I've reset all my clocks and all mobo voltages are set to auto.
In essence it appears that only the PCI-1 adapter is fully operational. I've tried different configurations of PCI slot and 5770. I matched the GPUs' BIOSes so they behave exactly the same, and I've tested them on their own in benchmarks and they both perform as expected.
I know PSUs can be taken to shops and tested, but I've just set up my rig in a new case and am reluctant to go back in and take most of it back out - but obviously I may have to.
The PSU is about 4 years old running for on average 5 hours per day and has gone through probably around 5000 power cycles. Could I expect it to be going faulty by now?
