So I left my laptop last night to download something. I woke up this morning to see the download has stopped with the message "Error: IO disk error". I resumed the download and it finished the download no problems after that. I then checked the event logs in Windows and saw this:

Looking back at the logs the problem occurred 115 times since 1st of Feb. Is this a HDD problem? The HDD is a Toshiba MK3265GSX.

eventid 11 indicates a controller error, which looks like could be caused by either sata port or hdd problem.
Suggest you do a backup first, then search for any toshiba diagnostics tools to check out the drive and take it from there.

Well I have all my stuff backed up on my desktop, so that's no problem.

None of the Toshiba HDD diagnostic tools want to run on my HDD since it's not Fujitsu branded as my laptop is Acer. I tried checking on the Acer site too to see if there was anything but there's nothing.

I might just replace the HDD, but I have no idea how to reinstall everything with the Acer eRecovery Management. Tried reading their FAQ but that just confused me . Does anyone know if the "Create Factory Default Disc" creates a bootable part to reinstall Windows and all the Acer applications that came with it? Or should I just mirror the drive to a new one? I have no idea how to do this...

I've had a bit of a search, and there is a toshiba hdd diagnostics tool on hiram's boot cd - is that any different from the one you found/tried? Otherwise there are other hdd diag tools to try, but you may end up having to repeat the diags with the hdd in another pc to tell where any problem is. Maybe also have a look at the smart data to see if it gives any clues (e.g. with hdtune)?

On your acer, it looks like the "create factory default disk" will create bootable DVD(s) from which you can do a reinstall back to 'as new' (i.e. including bloatware and trial stuff). I found a couple of links on backup/recovery that might help. . I'd be tempted to do a reinstall over cloning, just in case there was something messed up with windows that was a factor.

Yeah I made the factory disks right after I got my laptop, due to past experiences I never trusted Toshiba drives :p. And yeah, tried that tool, didn't work.

Was planning on installing HDTune and see what it says. Ordered the Seagate 320gb 7200rpm drive anyway since I find this drive too slow on boot compared to my desktop :p.

Follow these steps to solve the problem:-
...
Source:- Windows Recovery

Forcing PIO mode may well mask a problem, but unfortunately it doesn't really solve anything. Windows will drop down to this transfer mode automatically if it sees enough i/o errors (with consequential effect on data throughput). It seems unclear whether this would have any effect on the OP's controller errors.

Not sure what relevance your link to commercial data recovery software is to this.
