Possible Home Network Needed

Hello,

I'm not hopeful about this being resolved - but I thought I'd give it a go. I think this is the right place, if not feel free to move it.

I have two pc's in the house. One has been in an RMA stage for a good few months and is unaccessible, due to it being a graphics card RMA.

There is a file on one of the computers that I sort of need - but as I don't have the replacement card, am reluctant to pay money for a replacement with the RMA on-going and can't swap the cards (as one is AGP and I need PCI-E) - I was wondering if I could link up the computers in some way that I could access the file?

Both computers are running XP Pro

Thanks for any help.

The PC with the file you need the one with AGP? Surely you can borrow one from a friend or something? Or use the onboard graphics (If it has it.).

However, if the folder it was in was shared, and the computers are in the same workgroup/domain, hook em up with a crossover cable/through your router and browse to the location of the file.

Failing that, whip out the HDD and put it in the working PC.

Might have helped, don't count on it though. :p

The PC with the file I need is PCI-E. It doesn't have onboard graphics and I've already exercised the friend option. :( To no success.

The file I need is on the desktop.

The hard drive with the file on it is SATA and the other computer is older and only has IDE. :(

Failing those, what is the absolute cheapest graphics card I could get, that would allow me access? :D

You could get a sata/usb adapter I think there quite cheap now or even a SATA pci card for the IDE only pc.

Both resonable options.

You might also be able to find a PCI (not e) GFX card up from somewhere try the famous auction site.

Another thought, try a Remote Desktop Connection!

You'll be able to acces the desktop, and then copy it over by mapping a folder on the other PC's hard drive.

In theory, anyway... :p

Cheers Azraeluk, that was the last resort option.

Thought about this, but wouldn't I have to accept an incoming connection?

Only if a user is logged on, iirc. Should be ok from the login screen.

Er, without a graphics card the PC isn't going to POST, let alone get into Windows so forget that. You have only two options:

1). Take the hard drive out, but you'll need a SATA card in your situation
2). Buy a graphics card

You can get a crappy PCI graphics card off an auction site for a couple of quid, that'd do the job.
