What do you use your system for? Obviously that's a very, very powerful system but for gaming, for example, it's massive overkill. Obviously if you have that much money to spend, then go for it but if you wanted to save a few quid then there are plenty of changed you could make that would still make it a very capable machine.

If I were you mate. I'd wait before putting such large cash into that system, reason being, IvyBridge will be out early next year along with the new 600 range of Nvidia cards, also the HDD you went for is expensive considering the floods in thailand, if you could hold off until the next year I dare say you'll save yourself a good 40-60 quid.

But at the end of the day it's your money and it is a beast of a system, it is overkill but thats the fun of it I think for me at least :D

I need a system thats future proof - as much as possible, and one that will last for a good 4 years before I rebuild again.

Using it for casual gaming, Heavy Photoshop use, movie editing and CAD work.

Will IvyBridge be as good/better then these CPU's? and was there any indication of when the new GFX cards will be out?

Yeah though of that, but i have another system with the software and i can get it from that. Was trying to save cash where i can, although, from looking at the shopping list, I dont think i have managed that :(

Well £350 on a motherboard is a bit rich, a £250 one will do 99% of the same stuff.

£400 for a GTX580, I would get a £320 2.5GB GTX570 or wait for the next gen cards.

EDIT... And the EVGA GTX570 with 2.5GB has gone.

I have a thread with almost exactly the same build wanna swap notes? lol

My new Build in my thread is for much the same purposes of yours, photoshop , I do some 3d modeling ect.
feel free to critique my build.

regarding your case I'd go for a silver stone fortress 2 (one of the best cases for good air flow)

I would suggest you go for stuff with a 1155 socket as that is currently the most future proof

The i7 you have picked is a bit over kill and well my main gripe with it is its socket because otherwise I'd probably get that same
processor.

I would suggest this graphics card as I think its better than the one you selected

HIS ATI Radeon HD 6950 IceQ X Turbo 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £249.98

I think of cheapening my build because I think I may have gone over kill in places but people seem to think my selection so far is ok
so i may stick with it.

Try to avoid liquid cooling if you can and go with air cooling.
these are some good air coolers
Noctua NH-D14, Thermalright Silver Arrow, and the Phantek Ph-tc14pe

I am building my rig to be future proof also like you and I'm taking how I cool it very seriously, i'd suggest you do too.
than again thats just my opinion, I'm just excited to see someone is building a rig simuler to mine.

I'd get another cooler, the all in one watercooled loops aren't great, and I find mine quite loud. One of the dual 120mm fan jobbies like the phantek would be cooler and cheaper.

For 3d Work hyperthreading makes an impressive differerence, somtimes it can double your render speeds and as many cores as possible is best, so I'd stay away from 1155, for gaming it's great but if you're serious about 3D forget it, rendering is the most effective use of multithreading, and 2 more cores helps a lot.

I've found the 3GB 580 to be a fantastic card in 3d studio MAX, people will argue the point, but I've found it easily as good as a quadro costing thousands, and much better for games! The 3gb helps on scenes with a lot of polygons and big textures, keeps the viewports nice and fluid.

I have a couple closed loop coolers on my SR2 build and they do the job just fine, cool and quiet, the Noctua I have on my i7 920 struggles to keep up with long rendering sessions, so I have to say I've become a fan of closed loops. Rendering a long animation keeps my CPU at 100% for days, and with a pair of Khuler 620s I get a temprature of around 60 degrees max, I do have Apache fans on them, but only 1 each.

I'd say go with an Crucial M4 for an SSD, just for relability, I have 2 and have had no issues.

Sorry not meaning to hijack the ops thread but would you take a look at my build ?

I'll be modding games and I'm just really learning 3D though, so I don't know if I can warrant building a system just for it yet
and a more expensive cpu like the op's puts me to much over budget.
