so ive been running my e6300 for a month or two now
its clocked at 3.1GHz ok and i havent pushed it further
[not bad for £25 off the mm!]

one of the computers at work has died - looks like the chipset has gone
[cheapo fujitsu motherboard]
the computer is not too old but has been replaced already - so i have a dead pc sitting on my desk with an E8300 sitting in it

ive asked my boss if i can have the processor out of it and he has agreed to let me have that instead of my esales commission this month

so im left with the idea of a wolfdale towards the end of the month

trouble is - i can find much detail on the E8300
is it a good chip?
was going to run it with my current rig [mainly gaming]

i notice ocuk dont stock it due to the negligable price difference between the e8200 and e8400
anyone using this chip? is it worth upgrading or will i see no real performance gains

[it would be overclocked as soon as i got hold of it]

i did a google search on it but more for overclocking and reviews
i know its got more potential than my current chip

now to start pestering the boss!
 
It has 3 times the amount of L2 cache, and the 45nm improvements, and should clock to around 3.7! go for it!

1. In the BIOS I have set: 1.38125v, but current settings show in BIOS 1.33v. I have always assumed this is V droop.

2. Using CPU Hardware Monitor:
a. CPU VCORE: Min 1.32V Max 1.34V
b. Min temp on both cores = 46 C
c. Max temp on both cores = 69 C (Running Prime95) all day.

Note 1. I have never had a problem on this motheboard overclocking this CPU.
Note 2. I did have an Asus 780i (P5N-T deluxe) and an MSI 780i (P7N Diamond) and neither of these would allow me to run at this frequency.
Note 3. I have run stable at 4.2 ghz at higher voltages and temperatures just as a test (forgotten figures), but I felt I was safer going back to 4.1 ghz.
Note 4. I also use the Arctic Freezer Pro cooler, IMHO the other CPU coolers are overpriced for marginaly better cooling under load, because if you already have a good case with all the other fans running correctly, then you are starting from a lower temperature base for the rest of the system. Anyway, IMHO the others are only going to make a small difference to the temps. Also I have a Noctua NF-S12 blowing in the side of the Antec 900 case to ensure that there is a good flow of air over that general area of the RAM and the CPU and video cards.
Note 5. You will see I am cooking on gas mk7 (:D) with my SLI and these run really hot when I am flying IL2 forgotten Battles at 120fps on 1920 x 1200 with all the settings on high (SLI anti-aliasing 64xs). I can run prime95 and IL2 at the same time without a problem....I only tested this for 5 mins. Perhaps it is not a good indication anyway...but I tried it just to see and I typed this at the same time.

I would expect the e8300 to overclock well in my system albeit a little slower because of the 8 x multiplier. It would be 8 x 445 =3.64Ghz.

I need to ask you a question on your RAM, because I am looking to go to PC 8500 (2 x2gb) for vista on another drive, and just upgrading to another 2 sticks of geil IMHO is not a good idea and anyway, I can run the higher rated ram at higher frequencies on my overclocked e8400.

my 8500 wont clock that high with that volts, im 4ghz stable at 1.3v's. i can get into windows at 4.3ghz at 1.4v's but its not very stable at all. whats the question about the ram then? if you should sell up or just add another 2gig of PC6400? Im pretty new to this but i guess it depends what multi you wanna run your cpu and and the fsb ratio to your ram. my 8500 9x450 is running nicely at 1:1 with room to play with as its rated up to 1066mhz and will prolly go higher.

Yes I want to go to PC8500 because my PC6400 is a bit flacky after a while I get errors at 455 x 9 unless I up the Northbridge voltage. The ram is already running at 2.1 v.

he is keeping a careful eye on me at the moment so i cant do that

anyway it looks like he is asking me to put it for rma for a new employee :(:(:(

so after the possibility of this uprgrade fell through i have a severe case of upgrade-itis

ive seen an e8200 for £80 which i think is pretty good
or should i go for the 8400 for £115
 
anyone?

i know standard practice is to go 8400 as there is no price difference but is a brand new 8200 for £80 too good to pass up?
 
From what ive seen , most of the E8400s will run @ 4.0 ghz on 1.3875v and idle around 40c and load out in the mid/high 50 low 60s , 24/7.

The 8400 has my vote , i bought 3 of them :)
 
i think i will go e8400 then
may be worth selling some of my older stuff

plus i might get about £30 - £40 for my current cpu
 
yeah im thinking of swapping from AMD X2 to the e8400 when i comes in stock...and looking for a decent mobo to go with it.
