Possible Onkyo 606 fault, is this normal?

Hi guys,

Set up my 606 today and I've been playing with it. Played for a while on low volumes and then cranked it up to about 40. I could immediately hear a high pitched whine coming from my speakers. It got worse the louder I turned them up and is extremely irritating.

So far I have tried pure audio which eliminates the whine but is no good if I want to use the advertised 5.1 mono capabilities or any dsp for that matter.

I have also tried disabling audessy which does reduce the whine but does not remove it completely. It also seems wrong for an advertised feature to have to be disabled to listen to anything properly.

So do I have a faulty amp, has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks,

John

All sources, even when nothing is plugged into them. It only doesnt whine when pure audio is on which makes me think its a problem with the DSP?

I can reduce the whine by changing the EQ settings on the amp. However depending on the setting at the following volumes it becomes audible from about 2m away:

volume 42 audessy setting
volume 52 manual setting
volume 62 off setting

Also if I turn the treble down to -10 then the whine is also reduced but it kinda screws up what im listening to. :(

Edit: also while using headphones the whine cant be heard when it is set to dvd pure audio; is reduced when set to music stereo and is barely audible when set to music direct but can be heard at volume 32 on DVD mono.
