Possible PC problem...

I have some strange PC problem happening.

  • Multiple rebooting when powering up
  • Random reboots whilst running
  • USB devices randomly unplugging/plugging themselves within windows
My first inkling is the mother board, or maybe the overclock?

Any ideas?

Your best bet is to remove the overclock as you mention to rule out possible stability issues.

I assume all temps are ok.

Can you try running stability programs like Mem Test on the ram and Primes for the cpu.

Something else I failed to mention:

It reboots when I start a game, it happens just after logging into Wildstar (beta) and World of Tanks.

Its only just started to misbehave like this in the last 2 weeks.

No errors in the event logs. Just the usual "Computer restarted unexpectedly".

BIOS defaults now reloaded. Will retry.

UPDATE:

Well tried optimised defaults. Rebooted just after logging into World of Tanks.

- Screen goes black, like loss of video signal.
- Seconds after, sound starts to freeze and stutter.
- Seconds after that, the system reboots.

Could this be a GFX card problem, or motherboard?

I had a similar problem with my GameXtreme 850w psu that made the system unstable, warranty was a breeze and the replacement they sent has been solid for 6 years. But I would deffinately consider a different brand PSU, if of course the PSU is the problem, check the voltages in your bios (if you can with your system.) ..
If voltages are shown to be lower than stated in the manual, and/or not stable it could be an indicator that the PSU is dying.

Bugger, had about 7 random reboots during windows.

One was an uptime of only 12 secs :(

I guess something isn't stable. Will see if volts are available in bios.

have you tested with cpu/vtt between 1.10v and 1.15v?

also tested with just 8gb? ran memtest86 to see if you have any faulty ram sticks?

Yup, same problem. Even took off the OC and still random reboots :(

At present, the BIOS says:

3.3v = 3.284v
+12v = 12.240v

Will sort out a memtest. How long, and what test is best for that?

memtest86 and boot run it from usb mem stick

just do 3-5 loops and you'll soon see if any red errors crop up or not

I think it could be the GFX card. As now it appears the computer stays running, and I just get a black screen, and the monitor light turns orange as if its go no video signal. I have to hit the PC reset to reboot and the display returns.

I have switched the monitor to the IGP and it seems to have stopped the black screen. I also get a random horizontal line that keeps appearing in different places on screen when thru IGP.

I have been running stable on the i5 IGP and i swapped out the gtx580 and put in my spare AMD 6850. Both have run the OCCT PSU test without any issues.

With the gtx580 in, I just got a black screen and frozen PC before the test started properly.

Graphs running with AMD 6850.

Graphs running with gtx580, its managed to stay running with only a reboot when it first powered up.

Any assistance is welcome.

psu cant cope with the 580,they are power hungry cards

you don't want more wattage just a better quality psu
