Possible solution to gun/knife crime?

Obviously this is a big problem, particularly in the biggest cities so I was just thinking about how it can be tackled and figured this. I reckon most of the criminals are likely to be relatively poor and operating as part of a gang.

The police can't stop and search everyone so what they need is someone to tip them off as to who is carrying a knife or gun. If a reward of say £50,000 was available to anyone who phoned a police hotline to report someone carrying a weapon which lead to a quick response team arresting them (and subsequently resulted in a conviction) I think there'd be a lot more arrests made.

People won't do it for nothing but if you make the reward great enough I think it'd result in a lot of convictions. There would have to be some safeguards such as the weapon having to be on their person as it would be too easy to plant in a bag. Fingerprints on the weapon would probably have to be essential too.

£10m would help get 200 potential murderers off the street. I think that's pretty good value for money.

Not to be sterotypical at all, but im sure if 5 out of 10 people had a knife, you could probably identify 4 of them by just looking at them

But obviously the police cant do this as it would be classed as sexist/racist/ageist or somemthing else

As you've said, the system is wide open to abuse by planting stuff and so on. Also you've got to think of the consequences for the informant. A sudden £50,000 is gonna make you a big juicey target for the fellow gang members of the person you've got convicted.
For that much money you'd also get some people getting deliberately convicted. Maybe a year or two in prison for that kind of money? Even half of £50,000 could be a better deal than anything an internet loan can offer!

What sentances do people get for posessing off weapon nowadays? Not worth it for a slap on the wrist.

Get rid of PACE, that'l sort them out.

The problem is possession doesn’t come with a particularly big penalty so your going to be getting every petty criminal and his mate reporting each other to the police to get 50k reward. One of them does 6 months inside and gets 50% of the reward when he leaves prison. 25k for 6 months work, not bad.

PACE was brought in for a reason, the last thing that's needed is to get rid of it again.

i was going to suggest something a little less drastic. anyone caught carrying a gun will be shot in the back of the left knee cap with said gun and denied medical assistance.
