*Possible* Terror Thing - Ideas?

Well ok, it was a website entilted "<Something> Terrorism University" (I didn't see it for long so can't remember all of it) with some pictures of fundamentalists in masks doing the 'wave your gun in the air' thing.

Could have been reading a link from a news article for all we know. I wouldn't jump to conclusions that one of your clients is interested in terrorising you with weapons. edit: if its even an actual fundamentalist website.

Well exactly, which is why I'm not bothered about pursuing it any further. And am in fact telling my colleague to just forget about it.

There is snooping and justified cause.

Ultimately though people should be free to look at anything they want (within reason i.e. no paediophilia etc) but they should also be accountable and be able to justify it.

I love fire and explosions - does not mean I am about to start blowing up trains. More likely to make bonfire night more interesting.

Justify to whom? Seems like you're saying there should be some kind of objective adjudicating panel who decide whether you have a good enough reason to look at whatever you're looking at.

Does that sound like personal freedom to you?

The point about justification is in part a reference to the Lyrical Terrorist case that went through the courts recently.

There have been a number of cases where actors have been done on child pornography charges even though there justification was research.

That to me is someone being required to justify their actions and failing to do so.

The police regulary view child pornography but they have a solid justification in that they use the information gathered to prosecute child abusers.

Personal freedom goes hand in hand with personal accountability and personal common sense.

This isn't child porn. People wave guns around in wars, and wear camouflage etc, is viewing that illegal because it might be terrorists? Or is the word terrorist in the site enough to cause a conviction?

It is a little suspicious I guess. But you can't really draw anything from it without knowing more about the client.

It could quite simply be someone that was curious about some terrorist organisations. It's probably not hard to get linked to something like that...

It's probably more likely this than an actual terrorist as you'd assume they'd be more likely to cover their tracks. Sounds more like just some random dude who started having a read of something morbidly curious.

I'd check it out. I'd have confidence that nobody would ever realise I'd been snooping, and it'd give me peace of mind :) Then if it was suspicious, I'd report it but say more like "I was testing the laptop to make sure it ran ok, tested the wireless and this came up in the URL bar.." or something.

As above, this I'd probably just let slip... everything is monitored anyway. Would be different if it was "how to make a bomb in 5 easy steps" or a discussion group or something.

Child porn however must ALWAYS be reported.

It all depends upon intent and context.

If I had recently bought a large quantity of the chemical components to make a homemade bomb, and my internet history was full of links to radical websites giving detailed instructions in how to mix them, should I have to justify my browsing history?

Well if you had white phosphorus and explosives in your room, and those instructions, yes.

It wasn't the Osama Bin Laden terrorist University, by any chance?

I only ask, as I've seen the "prospectus" for that - it's actually quite funny...
