Hi

I have a friend living near me, who has an ADSL modem plugged into his WiFi router. But the coverage doesn't reach all the way round his house.

He's acquired another WiFi router (actually, I think he bought it with a WiFi card for his laptop), and has been struggling to get them to communicate, so he can use his laptop elsewhere in the house. He's had no luck so far.

Is this actually possible? or will there be an IP conflict, or something? I thought of it like connecting two switches with a network cable, but have never tried it with WiFi.

His latest router is a D-Link Airplus Xtreme G+ (54Mbps), but his old one is only 11Mbps !!

I haven't been round his house to see this setup, but the more I think about it, the D-Link will probably have the range to cover the whole house anyway!!

I heard a nump... I mean advisor in my local 'Purple Shirt' Shop yesterday tellin a customer this was possible!!... so it must be!...

His advice notwithstandin!... I think it is possible!... But a more expert opinion should be along soon!.. :)

I dont think a router can be set up as a repeater - although repeaters for specific model routers/access points can be bought.

But I think routers and access points can be set up as bridges between ethernet and wireless networks - rather than as repeaters.

But it is certainly possible if the particular router has a repeater mode.

I will following this thread with interest as I am not 100% certain and would certainly be curious to know.

Could you not just set the second wireless router's gateway, dns settings etc to be the first wireless router? That way if you connected onto the second router it would just use the first one as a gateway?

I managed to get this working with an old netgear DG824M as a repeater and a DG834G as the main DNS/DHCP - as the 824M had a slave mode.

Not sure about other brands, or how effective it would be if the equipment was from different manufacturers - but a day's fiddling and the combined brainpower of me and my 2 computer science student mates eventually got it working. Wasn't exactly a walk in the park though :p
