Possible to set up surround sound from PC?

Long optical cable installed and 5.1 sound in games working magnificently, all through the motherboard optical with no need for a soundcard (yet).

I enjoyed the sound that much that now I'm going to try and setup an old set of 2.1 speakers I have for use as rear satellites in the office...
