This is my current spec,

Processor: Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 2.5GHz Socket 775 800FSB 2MB Cache
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L iG31 Socket 775
Gfx Card: Sapphire HD 5670 512MB GDDR5
Memory: OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 Titanium Memory Kit CL4(4-4-4-15)
PSU: Hiper 480W Type-R Black

Currently I don't have the money to upgrade to a 1155 mobo/cpu/memory, so I've been looking at cheaper alternatives.

The only over clocking I've done is up the clock speed to just over 240x12.5 (3ghz). Last night I had a play around with over clocking my GPU using MSI Afterburner, got that to max out on the settings but not a huge increase. I then decided to try to up the cpu some more, at this point I was around 3.1ghz, so I pushed it to 3.2ghz, upon restarting it decided to restart again but now the cpu has reset back to stock. Changing it again in the bios has no effect.

Another thing to note is that cpu-z has my ratio at 1:2, although in the bios it's set to auto and seem to be 4.0. I dont fully understand the whole ratio thing :s.

Any way I guess I'll have to put a jumper on my cmos and reset it. When things go like that I'm not a huge fan of overclocking, especially if I have to keep resetting the bios.

So the only other upgrade I could look at is a better 775 cpu. My cpu is listed at no. 486 over at http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

I've looked at the following cpu's:
Pentium Dual-Core E6600 @ 3.06GHz no.383 £50.52 @ ******
Pentium Dual-Core E5800 @ 3.20GHz no.377 £56.34 @ ******
Pentium Dual-Core E6700 @ 3.20GHz no.372 £65.99 @ Overclockers

Thoughts?

Or persist with the overclocking and keep the E5200 and spend some money on better cooling.

Sorry for the rant.

Regards.
James.

The E6600 would not be decent upgrade, that was one of the launch Core2 chips!? :|
Wouldn't really recommend spending so much on an E5800 either.

If you're going to sink more money into the 775 setup, I'd look at getting a cheap Q6600 or similar Core2quad.

Nope, the E6600 he refers to is the Pentium E6600 which is actually pretty modern.

I would suggest going for a cheap quad core though instead.

Doing a quick search I've found this one.

BX80580Q8300 - Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300, S775, Yorkfield Core, 2.50 GHz, 1333MHz, 4MB Cache, 7.5x Ratio, 95W for £113.80

Since the market has moved on it's not going to be easy to find a good cheap one.

I have a 45nm E8400 for sale if you're interested. It's in the members market.

I'd remove the scan link. OCUK does not allow links to competitors.
