Hey guys, dont usually do this, but ive had this spec for quite a while now and the only thing ive changed is the graphics. As im a little out of touch with todays stuff as ive had no real reason to keep checking on things.

So heres what ive got now

Gigabyte DS3 965P board latest bios
Memory Geil 2GB DDR2 PC6400
Intel E6300 at 3.2ghz stable for the last 2 years
HD4850 card

So with that baseline, what would be worth changing and would i see any difference in gaming or normal computer usage. Just looking for a bit more pace, less sluggish if you know what i mean.

budget as little as possible, graphics card is perfectly fine in my eyes, only gaming at 1440x900, can just about manage max details on the games i play or tweaking the cfg files to make run smoother.

Upgrade to 4gb of RAM, your 4850 should still be fine for a while longer and with your CPU at 3.2Ghz it shouldn't cause any problems for you.
only other thing is with future games using quad cores more you may want to think about either a quad core for your current motherboard or look at a full build to I5/I7 later down the line.

Well for a super cheap upgrade which you should easily notice the difference get as much ram as possible. Your board will take 8 gig MAX.
Put these inCorsair 800mhz 4gb or if you can afford it 2 lots £46 for 1 set £92 for 2 sets

think your links wrong "Corsair XMS2 2GB (2x1GB)" only 2gb, but anyway for ram i'd get rid of the current ram you have and go for some kingston hyperx HERE

cool, ill order some of those now, pretty good price to boot, cheers guys. Ill also take a look into a full upgrade, but that would be for the new year.

Hi sorry to just jump in i to have a very similar set up
e6600,gigabyte 965p dq6,ddr2 pc24300,4850

i was just wondering why the 64 os would make a difference
and could i replace my cpu with a quad core without changing mobo

thanks for your time

a 64bit operating system can use more RAM, i believe the limit for a 32bit is around 3gb(not sure)

Edit, your board will support quads so no need to change it
Supports Intel® Core™2 Extreme Quad-Core / Core™2 Duo processor
Supports Dual channel DDR2 800 memory

32bit os doesnt recognise more that 3gb of ram. 64bit os does. Hence why 64bit would be beneficial when upgrading ram to 4gb or more

bleh got ninja'd

Thats great
so i might look for a quad cpu [if its worth the benefits] any suggestions ,and the ram i purchased is decent ,
i only play games on it really .

thanks for the advice

Quad ona budget: C2Q 8200

I was just thinking if i start to go down the road up upping the cpu [roughly £100 for that alone] would i be better looking towards an i5 cpu and changing the mobo and ram [maybe an extra 170 on top]
would this make an even bigger improvement ,or would it be just as well sticking with the cpu change .
thanks really helpful.

Depends really hwo much your willing to spend.
You will notice a difference and the i5 750 loves games

For the CHEAPEST i5 build (i5 stock and i5 oem with freezer 7 is same price)

you can ignore the shipping cost too since you qualify for free postage so its about £315
