My girlfriends mum asked me to have a look at her PC as she couldnt access her hotmail account.

Having expected it to be her doing something stupid it turns out that I'll be damned if I can figure out why.

Hotmail ends up on an error page when trying to log in.
Windows update will get to the page where it is checking your machine for updates and then goes to an error page.
Windows Defender says it needs new definitions yet cant update
Norton wont update its definitions.
When you do a full scans with both Norton 360 and Windows Defender it fails to compleate yet will run a quick scan ok.

Now I'm not sure what to do, everything was ok on her machine upto a day or 2 ago but getting any information out of her about where she has been or what she has downloaded is sketchy at best.

Any ideas on how to proceed, thought about a rollback but chances are that they arnt turned on.

Turn off system restore.
Reset all IE security settings (in the menu) / remove cache.
Install NOD32 trial + update.
Scan in safe mode.

check the mtu settings on the router and confirm that it is correct for your ISP - my folks are with AOL, who use 1400 and have seen similar issues (i.e. can't log in to hotmail and can't update certain things).
