Possible Windows Update issue?

I have had my 25P running fine for about 6 months with media centre in the below config:

Shuttle 25P
Opty 170
2GB GSkill ram
1*36GB raptor
1*300GB Samsung 7200rpm
DVD +/-
usb wireless
standard usb mouse + ps2 keyboard

The other day when I loaded windows it booted completely correctly until the split second before the log in screen and it displays " a device cannot be initialised, please remove or start in safe mode to disable before continueing" when you press ok it automatically reboots windows.

When you select Safe mode just after POST, the drivers / dll's are displayed as they load and then just as windows startsthe same message comes up and then reboots as indicated above!!!

The keyboard is working fine on another system and I have tried booting without the usb mouse and without the wireless connected and the same message appears

I cant think of any internal hardware that could cause this kind of message (most mobo items would either cause a crash or would allow windows to start) - Unless anyone can think of something along this lines is it an Windows Update thats "FUBAR'd" my installation?

Anyone any idea what could be wrong and how to sort it (without reinstalling XP preferably) ?

(Also posted in the SFF section just incase)

I bet it is the graphics card. Windows update can be b*****d about drivers sometimes but it will only d/l and install if you went on custom windows update.

It happened via win update to my grahics card.

But surely if this was the case Windows would crash before this point wouldnt it?

Also Safe mode would work, as that surely shouldnt load anything apart from standard vga drivers?
