• Competitor rules

Please remember that any mention of competitors, hinting at competitors or offering to provide details of competitors will result in an account suspension. The full rules can be found under the 'Terms and Rules' link in the bottom right corner of your screen. Just don't mention competitors in any way, shape or form and you'll be OK.

Possibly been scammed

Yeah I didn't think they'd suspend an account over a dispute as that would make it impossible for him to respond to the dispute wouldn't it? I know the guy is lying now, everything I say he comes up with some excuse.

he can still log in and could respond to a dispute, he could even refund you your money if he wanted to, the only thing he can't do is send/recieve/transfer more money until he corrects whatever it is the suspension is for

so he either needs to send the card, or refund you your money but I wouldn't wait for either of those I would go ahead and raise a dispute - even then paypal will send him an email telling him to send the item and prove he's sent it if he wants to keep your money

Does the paypal account have to be valid to pay into it in the first place.

If not, it could still be genuine. He might not have checked if his paypal account was still valid before he advertised, and he might have been reluctant to email from his friends. On the other hand, a 7950 is hardly a card a novice to all this would have for sale.

Well now he isn't even answering what I'm asking him and is just telling me to calm down and that I will get the money back. Not helpful at all when I'm £170 out of pocket. I've told him I'll be taking it further if paypal don't deal with it.

don't bother talking to this guy - he could have refunded you already so clearly he's trying his luck, just raise a dispute, I did this previously on paypal's suggestion and got my money back within a couple of days of raising the dispute

You'll get your money back,Hell need to provide proof of postage to paypal ect, good job you went throught paypal and not a bank transfer

And be aware on gumtree its littered with scammers

NEVER buy anything off gumtree with paypal for postage, you'll always be scammed. I've had it done to me in the past, use it as a collection only kind of site.

PayPal actually seems to be safe as long as you don't use the gift option which I didn't. What I find strange is he wrote on the description for the item transaction I will issue a full refund if a dispute is raised.

This exact thing happened to me before trying to buy an iPhone. I disputed it and eventually got my money back, although it did take a while to get it back as far as I remember.

Yeah it states he has till the 28th to reply to the dispute and I'm guessing he wont bother so it could be 2 weeks before I get anything back. Maybe longer.

Yeah Paypal is safe, you will get your money back but it's abit of hassle having the money taken then having 2 weeks or so to get it back, just easier to save the hassle and only use it for cash on collection stuff. :)

Think I'll be sticking to MM from now on. Items on ebay aren't cheap anymore as people filter in the costs of fees and by the sounds of it gumtree is scam capital of the internet.

Probably already been said but you're obviously an honest guy. Get your money back, but if the card turns up arrange to pay him again. Simples.

that statement makes no sense to me, how are you anymore protected with using MM then say gumtree?

mm is just the forum its posted on , say for instance you Bank transfer money for a item you see on mm and it dont turn up. I dont think Ocuk are going to do anything, he might get banned off the forum but thats about it.

Id say using paypal is your safest option, and thats on any site you use here gumtree ebay etc.

I always use paypal but I think there is far less scammers on the MM than gumtree. MM has a minimum sign up time and post count and I doubt many on here want to lose out on the MM through scamming people. Gumtree anyone can post an ad.

I guess as long as you use paypal your safe enough.

Not when your account is limited or suspended. It might look dodgy, but PayPal can and do limit accounts for what seems like no good reason. I've had it happen to my account. The guy could have sold a fair few things recently using his PayPal account, and they could very well have limited his account and be demanding that he changes his account to a business account, and supply various documentation.

When my account was limited, they asked me for various bits of documentation, and then a week later it got limited again because the idiots there hadn't processed the documents properly. Also, Gumtree is owned by eBay, who also own PayPal, just in case you didn't know.

You will get your money back though if he can't send it to you (assuming he isn't trying it on with you).

That will be because when an account is suspended or limited, what you can actually do or access within the account is also limited. A straight refund isn't an option without a dispute from my experience.

I'll just have to see what comes of it by next friday. Got a feeling he'll respond on the final day just to elongate the process so he can try and walk off with the money.
