I have been asked by the local air ambulance if i want to do some shots for them. They are sending some info through the post and also the marketing manager is going ot call me in the next few days to sort out what they want me to do.

they want some nice looking shots of the aircraft and also get to go on training missionsand incidents with them to capture what they do. Since the Hammond crash they have got a second chopper and really are interested in promoting it for more sponsors.

To be honest i am quite happy doing it for free just to get the experience and i can always keep some marketing of thiers that has my work on it. Will be a nice addition to my commisioned work portfolio! which has nothing in it at the mo :p

What do you guys think would be interesting shots that i can pitch to them.

I am thinking of:

a/ the classic crew shot with the heli behind them.
b/ pilot flicking switches in flight shot and navigator.
c/ some shots of people being loaded into the heli from close and also far away
d/ maybe some of people that have been saved thanking the staff

Any advice really on how to go about this etc will be greatly appreciated.

Don't let your goodwill allow you to be screwed over for free!

I certainly wouldn't do it for free, as even if your doing it for experience, dealing with the sale is a big part of it..

hopefully i can make some moeny out of it - i wouldnt know where to start charging - i will see on what terms they want the images first.

Certainly sounds like a good experience. If they have two 'copters then maybe see about getting up in one, above the other to take some shots. Also some shots of the crew jumping out/leaving the helicopter in an emergency type fashion?

i was thinking of doing a picture in one hovering and the other doing a fly by to get a panning shot - I wish i could have done it with the view from above competition!

That s some cracking experience! is it for the yorkshir air ambulance? they are a charity so your fee will either be low to none. As for going up in the second chopper for shots is that really going to be possible? it costs a substantial amount per flight of the chopper, i know that they are looking for a lot of good publicity though for more sponsors. but should be some excellent work for your portfolio

expressions...

on faces of people being helped..

off crew helping people..

off people in the aircraft being transported..

off crew in aircraft reassuring the people..

good luck would love to see the images if possible

Yes it is for them based at sheffield city airport (maybe not for long though). They are a charity and yes i have already told my self not to get my hopes up about getting paid but if i get anything it will be put back into my lens fund. :p The portfolio is my main gain in this.

They require £3500 a day (per 'copter) or something like that to maintain/fly the 'copters

I am not 100% on incidences but for example i know training sessions i will have access, they will want me down at events they are covering and if anything happens then i get the shots of who they helped. However at the same time they may not want their pictures taken so if they get used is another thing.

yeh its £7k a day they require, the company i work for sponsor them we have our logo on the choppers! :D, good luck with it and keep us informed how you get on!

Hey 33L

Let us know how you get one, sounds like a wonderful exerpiance. How did they know to approach you?

Btw, just checking your FlickR account, you a Hallam student?

Well they were getting people to sign up for various things at work and i wanted to ask if i could pop down to shoot the aircraft.

Even before i asked they said they were looking for a photographer to take pics etc and i handed over my business card and thats it really.

It was really lucky. I am so chuffed with the oppertunity - beats the occasional portrait!

Which company is it - I'll make sure it stands proud on an image or two ;)

Well i received there info pack and in it it states that it is volunteer work which i don't mind but what i do mind is that they retain all the copyrights to the image and nowhere does it state that i will be credited or the images.

I will have to call them tomorrow to see how they want to play it. I guess i wouldn't mind if the images that got published said photos by Lee Yule copyright Yorkshire Air Ambulance

What do you think?

i think to have your name publisized along side them would be fine me, but i would check that you would be allowed to freely use the images for your portfolio if they are going to hold the copyrights of the shots. If they say yes you can then just get it done the experience alone is worth it and volunteer work is always a good start to greater things

I'd probably be happy with that as long as you can use the images yourself for non profit (i.e for your portfolio etc.)

I'd want a credit for the photos but I wouldn't look for any money as they are a non profit organisation and also a good cause.

Have you thought about getting a 10-20 / 10-22 and getting some shots inside the chopper?

yup its my next purchase - want to go for the canon over the sigma as ordering over net and dont want to get a soft cop as man have had.

Just spoken to YAA and they have said that i can have full credits for the work if its either published on the net or printed promotion.
They have also said that having images for non distribution i.e. my protfolio is fine i will be sending a covering letter in along with my details and photos for my pass! So what i can do is have the a copy of what was printed/published and also a copy of the original image. I guess just so long as it has a (c) YAA on it.

They said that they are recruiting a south yorkshire promotions manager over the next week or two and work should come in from after that but they didnt say if they had anything planned in the near future.

If you want to get the aircraft in flight, getting the rotor blades looking 'right' is diffcult. The need to look moving, not blurred, or frozen. For this, you will need about 1/60th sec.

It unlikely you'll be able to get that close to a helicopter while its running, so youll probably need either a tripod, or a steady hand and IS, on a lens of around 150 - 250mm ish. a 70-200 VR/IS is probably your best bet.

Inside, there will be less space than you think. Probably about the size of a clio or other small car. Why not practice the shots you want on a mate, inside a small car.
