Blank Firing Attachment (BFA), partially plugs the barrell to simulate the resistance that the hot gases would have to push against when firing a live round. Without the BFA the gas would escape the barrell so quickly the pressure would be gone before enough gas had entered the gas clyinder/gas plug to force the bolt back and chamber another round.
As a secondary function it slows down the gases and wadding/bits of brass leaving the barrell to safer levels. Although it can still do some nasty damage, had one guy on excerise end up with a 1 inch deep wound on his leg from someone firing a burst too close.
