It's quite simple really just pen tool block out the biggest blocks of colour then layer it up with smaller/lighter areas of colour. Gets a lot harder to get things like skin looking right though, most people move on to gradients for that.

Id say im fairly competent with PS, but those vectors I could never get to grips with. Always wanted to do a good one, but whither its my inability to choose the correct shadings so show depth or whatever or maybe I just don't have the patience, I dont know.
