Inflation calculator says that's equivalent to about £17k now, wouldn't be surprised if the plate was worth much more than that.

Yeah, its the only place ive seen two cars side by side at 60mph on a 2 lane dual carriageway and a BMW X5 overtakes by driving between them and forcing them both to move over
