Postman Pat!

There are loads of metal Royal Mail lockboxes scattered around every city that you won't have noticed....you get your mail from them, or your boot, or sometimes a shop or business if you're on a town centre round. The funny thing is, after you've started as a Postman you start noticing those lockboxes all around the city, even ones you've walked past for years and not noticed.

Nice one :) Good luck during the next few months it’s going to be crazy with Christmas being round the corner, I can link you to an excellent forum dedicated to postal workers that’s not run by RM just normal posties like you and me :) Excellent resource for information help and to get stuff off your chests, I can send you this via email if you want?

Once you have being there a few months mate it gets easier but it’s not a walk in the park, I still struggle on crazy days just like today I got done for 2.15 :D:p

Dam Sky mags, and bulk postage :(

Congratulations on official job :)
So its about £350 a week for 20 or so hours? Or did I misread it?

Nah the wage is something like £7.70 an hour. At the time i applied the vacancy was for Perminant job, but 25hrs.. however i got told that there is often overtime, And someone in the know mentioned earlier in the thread that i would be looking at over 30hrs without a doubt.

if it was 350 for 20 odd hours work. I imagine everyone would wanna do it :D

And yeah Fos if you can email me that link to my trust email i would appreciate it.

Thanks chaps! :)

25 Hours is about £170+ after all deductions, 40 Hours is around £300+ with all deductions.

I believe new starters don’t have a pension and don’t have to be in the union so not paying for these adds a little more to your wage.

You say you are a manager, what was your role when you started out? Is there ways to work up the ladder?
Hi, I started as a postie for quite some years, then I did some driving duties then I became a PHG which is office based and then I went into DOM support role which is also office based.

Then I did a bit more walking and applied for management and got the job. If its the same as my area you will start off as a bag carrier in which you will turn up to the office fill up your pouches and go out on delivery. I dont think you will drive for a while, plus you have to do your driver change over which is like a mini driving test before you are allowed into any RM vehicle.

In my opinion being an actual Postman is the best job because like others have said already you are on your own as soon as you leave the office and can go straight home when your finished. It also keeps you relatively fit too so thats a big bonus, Its the one thing I miss now because I have to compensate by exercising when I'm not at work. Driving used to get on my nerves because you always seemed to be stuck in traffic jams, plus Christmas is a bit of a nightmare as a driver as there are so many parcels to deliver.
So if you can handle the weather and the walking then I would recommend staying in delivery.
The chances of becoming full time will be very slim im afraid. However, maybe after a couple of years then start applying for office based roles and get trained up on that side of things, it will put you a good position to apply fr management and then the pay side of things are quite reasonable. What I just said is probably one of the only ways of getting any full time work in the delivery sector at the minute.

I have been there for more than a year, and I am not in the union. There are a few long-timers who are not in the union that I know of, we were all "scabs" during the strike last year :o It felt dirty, but those striking were just giving themselves 3/4 days work all at once for one day's pay....never been a fan of trade unions myself being somewhat middle class.

The pay goes up from 7 something per hour to 8 something per hour after 6 months IIRC.

Our mail centre has a gym for flabby management types :D

If you meant full time as in management fair enough, but the chances of being put on a full time round as a postie far outweight the chances of getting part time at least up here. I am on a part time contract but covered full time rounds for almost a year before I landed a cushy part time round. The number of full time jobs in the mail centre versus part time is like 10 to 1 so chances are you'll get put on a full time round unless you're lucky.

A mate of mine has been a postie for years. One perk of the job is that he's had his wicked way with quite a few hotties on his round ;)

Watch out for those bored housewives asking you in for "coffee" :p
