So my wife currently has a mk 3 focus st and is looking to change cars. She had a go in my e92 m3 and quite liked it, so i've been looking at M235i's as a nice little upgrade for her. Is there any downsides (aprat from losing 2 doors and a seat), from what i've read it should get better MPG's (which IMO has always been too low in the st, but is not the main reason to change).

Cheers

It's more expensive, there will be less room in the back, and the boot will be smaller.

Otherwise, I don't think so.

Personally if she doesn't need the extra room the Focus offers I can't really see a downside. I would definitely rather have the BMW than the Ford.

It's hard to think of much really outside of the space and assumed extra cost of purchase

Better engine, better looking interior, better noise, more modern infotainment etc

Not convinced you will see much or any mpg difference but equally I wouldn't expect it to be lower

I'd expect the m235i will have lower mpg. I know someone with a new one and averages around 24mpg. I also know someone with a mk3 Focus st a few years old who averages around 30. Of course driving style is totally dependent but the m235 is the more powerful car. Absolutely gorgeous too, I love them :)

2 series boot is deeper than the 1 (so I guess the same with the focus?), but lacks the headroom of the hatchback. The 1 series would be far more equivalent if you need something tall in the boot. But, I would imagine both are still less usable space than the Focus as you've got rear drivetrain bits and bobs under the boot taking up space.

The other main difference between the 2 series coupe and a focus hatchback - loss of middle rear seat and less visibility through the rear.
