Potential new PS3 owner - Noob questions

So the DualShock3 controllers are the ones to own then?
I can see them at around £32 delivered from Hong Kong via the Bay.

I'm assuming that at some point they will be available directly in the UK?

Yeah, but i bet they will be more expensive than that. The dualshock really is leaps and bounds ahead of the sixaxis - to the point where i've had to restart drakes fortune in hard because normal became too easy when i switched.

At some point they will be shipped with all new systems as standard, but yeah they will also be available in the UK in the months to come.

If you are considering buying a second controller then it's definately worth spending that little extra for the DS3 imo. The standard SIXASIS controllers which are still shipped with the console don't have as high a build quality and also have no rumble - should still do for the wife though ;)

I have one more quick question - hope I've not totally bored everyone yet, sorry if these have all been answered before.

I read that the 40GB HD can rather easily be upgraded by the end user.
What's more it doesn't actually void the warranty.
Well that sounds very interesting.

So the quick questions are:

1. Is it a PATA or SATA 2.5" drive inside the PS3?
2. Is it as simple as it sounds - one drive out, one drive in and switch on?

Thanks again guys.

It's a standard 5400rpm SATA 2.5" laptop drive. incredibly easy to swap out - do a search on youtube and you will see numerous videos showing you how it's done.

Make sure you get a 5400rpm drive though as faster ones have been known to cause problems.

SATA, the one in the PS£ is a 40gig 5200rpm one. If you don't have any data to backup it is indeed as simple as take one out put one in - to back up data you need a USB harddrive and there is an option to backup your data. This is only necessary if you have savegames/demos you want to keep.

I've read elsewhere if you fit a 7200rpm drive it actually slightly decreases loading times (on average by about 10%, but sometimes up to 25%). Haven't read into it much but it's definitely worth researching.

[EDIT] Just read above that 7200 drives cause problems so ignore me.

The PS3 is rated very highly as a BD player and also as an upscaling DVD player, Its possibly not the best BD player out there but for the price and all the other features i dont think its bettered.

AFAIK it's the only current Blu Ray player that can accept a firmware update so it can utilise the extra features of Blu Ray 2.0 discs... or whatever it's called? Early adopters of stand-alone Blu Ray players would have to buy a more up to date Blu Ray player to get the extra features of Blu Ray 2.0 films (which are not available yet... I think?).
