We could do what Australia did.
Build battery storage.

And how much can they store?

Europe's largest grid connected battery storage is currently being built in Scotland with an aim to be live in Apr 2024.

It will consist of 2 x 400MW farms.

They are there to bolster the electricity created by renewables in Scotland.

In fact, a quick Google shows several other battery farms being installed in Scotland with each being 50-100MW units and some in England too.

Not easy to find.projexted energy storage capacity as a total.
 
Simply not viable for large scale grid storage is it.
I was googling just after a posted the link and it seems tesla battery storage is being installed in lots of places in the uk.

So it seems it is viable.

400MW is not a useful comparison that's like telling me the top speed but neglecting to mention it only has enough fuel to go half a mile.

MWh is the number we need. So an old coal station like Radcliffe on Soar if they go their boogey on a few months in advance could store 2 or 3 TWh of electricity on coal form. 2,000,0000 MWh or 2,000MWh (full load) for 6 weeks continuously.

Most battery storage in the World at the moment hold a modest capacity and have the purpose of balancing second by secon fluctuations associated with wind and solar. That is the express purpose of the one recently built in South Austrlia from what I've read.

To make wind and solar work only we probably need enough storage for 3 days at full winter load. Currently 60,000MW multiply that by 72 hours 4,320,000 MWh. If you assume an aspirational cost of £100 per KWh = £430Bn. I'm sure you could shave that down by reducing your storage amount but even a days supply for full load might cost you £100Bn if you can reach the aspirational cost of £100KWh installed.

Why do we need 3 days worth when national grid forecast 3 hour blackouts?
If we're not exporting but storing the excess then it will top the storage back up.

You would have also read that the storage in Australia saved them $40m over what they would have paid for elsewhere for the electric.

It's could be like lock-down again when many discover they have a wife, husband, girlfriend, boyfriend, kids and they have all learnt to talk.

That said, according to the press, that now seem to make the news, rather than report it, it could be worse than that :cry:
 
I don't know how but we are using 300kwhvor 50% less electric compared to last Oct and gas usage is down 75%.

We must have been wasting so much energy. Simple things we have changed.

Air fryer
Heat pump dryer
Kids are showing instead of baths
Smart plugs on everything with nocturnal shutdown

South Africa has had load shedding for years - couple of less obvious tips I've seen mentioned on videos about it,

1) Have some cash - card payment systems may not be working even if you have power.

2) Don't turn sensitive electronics on for 30 mins after the power comes back as it can be spiky due to getting hammered.
 
If they come ours will be:

Thursday: 15:30-18:30
Friday: 06:30-09:30
Friday: 21:30-00:30

We can easily live with that so not too bothered.
 
our business is certainly preparing for blackouts and have been told they are very likely to happen - we would run on generators for hours at a time.

i see pollution being a big problem - these generators are built for power stability, not clean burning.

Most important for me was identifying my load block - which I thought was S, until I read that article. In fact, you're looking for a tiny box with a letter in it, as shown below:
