Potential power outages this winter

In hindsight I hope it does happen so I can hear all the tears of the millennials upset about not having tik-tok or whatever crap they are glued to :)
PS, you are hating on Gen Z, not Millennials. Well, maybe some younger Millennials, but there are a whole bunch aged 30-41 :p

Funny though, to think back in 2005 people weren't labelling others Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, Gen Z like it is today. You didn't start getting Millennials for everyday branding until 2009/10. Now everyone flings it around like mud. You're even getting so many around online branding people as Boomers 33 - 45.

Yet you never hear this talk in person. Not to this extent you get online where it's used as derogatory purposes.

really not fussed about a few hours without power its not like the apocalypse is it
I've got a lovely fish tank full of corals and all sorts. It needs heating, circulation, filtration, addition of nutrients regularly, lights etc. Should be fine without lights for a few hours, nutrients being missed will affect water stability but shouldn't be too drastic. Heat, flow and filtration are all essential though. Loss of power for 6hrs+ could result in the loss of all livestock at a cost of several thousand pounds.

Paywalled article. TLDR?
How are they in the position considering all the nuclear plants they have?

I couldn't read it either but the sub header was:

Years of underinvestment in its aging nuclear fleet risk causing chaos in France this winter

So I guess they either don't have enough or the ones they do have aren't good enough or might be closing down.

The issue they have is that this is the time they usually take loads of them offline for maintenance and at the same time there has been lots of protests. The protests are delaying the maintenance work which is causing a risk of not having sufficient electricity in the winter. As most of France’s heating is electric that is not good.

just love it that the bbc is potentially preparing scripts ready for this, how the hell we going to listen to them. pedal bike to power the generator or something

thought we're living in the 21st century. Also how can you pre-empt what russia is going to do and already blame them. if this doesn't scream conspiracy i dont know what does

That was the thing I hated about fish tanks. The loss of power on cold days you'd see the water temperature drop fast but tropical was somewhat easier. Whole other ball game with fresh water.

I remember hearing the stories of some bad winters early 2000's. People that lost the contents of their tanks because power was down for days. It was a lot of money.

The number of drones that are being flown around Norwegian gas supplies is worrying. Does make you think if they would start to target these in which case we will very quickly start going days without power.

Yep, i'm currently trying to source a generator that i can run the tank from while it's down. Worst case i can rig up an UPS with a bunch of 18v makita batteries but then if i'm away with work when the power is cut i'm still screwed. No netflix or whatever anyone can deal with, but this is pretty big for me. Can't imagine how much people with dialysis or other medical equipment are feeling right now.

Do people really need UPS's or generators for 3 hour powercuts, surely we can survive without electric devices for that time?

The main things you need are light and heat.
Get some lanterns or candles, put on extra layers and buy a camping stove so you can make hot drinks or heat up some food.

Fridges and freezers will be ok for that amount of times.

Read, play games or talk to someone.

edit:
I realise that some people still power for medical devices etc, but they're in the minority

What about those who WFH? Or devices like fish tanks where a power cut can literally cost you £100s or £1000s?

Agree unless you have a life critical need then you do not need power during the 3hr duration, but life is about choice and people are free to do as they see fit.

Both wife and myself work from home.

Otherwise no, 3 hour power cuts would not bother me. I bought a generator that should power everything we need to work from home.
