Well with everyone going intel these days, a little something could potentially be coming my way. I've been offered first refusal of a dual CPU motherboard and a couple of opteron 2220's (i think, they run at 2.6ghz but im not certain of the code?)

This would give me 4 cores, I'm guessing not much potential to OC but could anyone hazard a guess at the kind of output i could get from this setup? The price is tempting me but if the output isn't currently worth it i may just plump for getting a C2D.

So yeah any and all input/thoughts welcome please!

If I'm understanding the data on fahinfo.org properly then a C2D overclocked to about 3GHz will produce as much as both 2.8GHz Opterons put together.

Unless it's a real bargain I'd save the money for a Quad instead - the lower running costs will make up for the extra initial outlay during its lifetime anyway

Even how cool two Optys would be I do agree :)

Yeah you can't deny the fun it would be :D

I'd also worry about them only having 1MB L2 cache per core, bound to suffer with the SMP units being benched on a machine with twice that

Roll on AMD's next model - it can't be good to have such a one-sided market :o

Damnit i want to love AMD but they are making it so hard these days :( Well for the same price i could get this, i could buy a secondhand e6400 +mobo and OC it so if its not going to beat a C2D i can't really justify it.
