Potentially broken graphics card.

GPU's certainly fail more often than CPU's. The issue really doesn't sound like the motherboard at all. I think a 1070 would be a good match for that board, albeit 1080's are better value at the moment if you can find one at the right price. YOu can get a 1070 at less than £400 if you shop around and a 1080 at less than £500. Course there is always the GTX1060 which can be had for less than £200 now, again if you shop around. Prices are expected to continue falling over the next few months, expeicially with the cryptocurrencies tumbling at the moment.

I agree I am fairly certain its the GPU, just not able to confirm that at the moment but I am getting prepared for buying a new card.

The GTX1060 seems like a good fit also. Not sure though I think I am leaning towards the RX580

Bake the 780 in the oven for a bit, if you still get artifacts on screen after rebooting then bin it.

Yep I have heard that one. There's a few other things we can try but I am pretty sure its knackered. Showing all the signs. Most people seem to agree 4 years is a reasonable life span for a GPU.

I can't believe it, my card is working again like magic. I plugged the card in today, just try it again and it was fine. Booted up first time no problems.

I am really not sure what had caused the original problems I was having. One thing I did notice was my current driver is about 3 years out of date. I am going to see how it behaves in the next couple of days but I am tempted not to update as I am just very glad to have the card back.

It is so good to actually play games in decent settings again, although very strange.

So tonight I was doing a bit of gaming and the card started to play up a bit. I noticed some of the lights in the game started playing up, for example going off etc, then I started seeing black triangles on the game screen. After doing a bit of research it looks like my card might be overheating. I have also read that the GPU thermal paste over time can become degraded. I might have a try at re-doing it. Any one have experience of this?
