Potentially stupid towing question:

Definately need someone in the car believe me I once was being towed in my sister clio (bad enough) but there was no electrics in the middle of winter (it had snowed) and I had to do roughly 120 miles. :(

sounds like a nightmare to me! When I needed the Honda recovering I got a man with a Mitsu L200 and heavy duty trailor to move it for me. Cost me about £45 all in.

A car being towed by a rope/bar acts like a normal car as it has all 4 wheels on the road - you need someone in the towed car to steer & brake, otherwise it will end in disaster VERY quickly.

If you can lift 2 wheels off the ground, then in effect you turn it into a trailer, and do not require anyone else in the car towed vehicle.

Ideally you want the engine running and in neutral on the towed car as well otherwise you'll have no brake servo and no PAS (if fitted)

I had to sit in my car and steer it when the RAC towed it with a pole. I don't think I had to brake, just had it in neutral with the engine running so I could shift the steering wheel :)

You definitely need someone to steer!

I remember being towed to a scrappy in a 405 with no engine, brakes or electrics, and it was raining!

I had to stick my head out the window and drive Ace Ventura style as I couldn't see **** as there wipers wouldn't work (no battery)!

Luckily it was less than 2 miles...

Bah, bunch of pansies running the engine so you've got your assisted brakes & steering!

Last few cars I've been towed in I've had no PAS and no assisted brakes, I've had to do everything myself! (That would be because they've had either no engine, or a dead engine) You're not braking hard anyway, just enough to scrub some speed off! And turning the wheel is easy once you're moving!
