Pothole major damage

The problem was not much lighting there and it was raining so full of water and all 15cm deep of it hidden..
I hope you manage to claim the costs back.
Crappy situation to be in. I'd also be raising an absolute stink with the RAC. If you pay them for a service, you expect it to be available within a few hours. NOT 7!

If the pothole is that bad other people must have hit it too. I hope you took a lot of pictures.

I claimed from council years ago - I had a 1989 Mazda 626 and front nearside alloy was buckled and tyre had a bulge in it.

Council in effect told me to buzz off so wrote them another letter saying their action fixing potholes was between negligence and Malfeasance and four days later I had a cheque for 300 odd quid.

I should do it now as I have a set of ruined 18" Ford (starred out -white things falling from sky in winter) sitting around but can't be assed to do it.

This is why I have Pothole insurance as an extra on my policy.

Costs me £60/year but if I hit one and damage my car it gets repaired under my insurance. Doesn't affect my main policy, it's like windscreen cover.

Once my damage is dealt with, my insurance company then goes after the responsible party for the costs. Councils aren't going to argue with a company that has a army of laywers....
Never seen this offered?

Add £50pa to premiums for a few years or fork out thousands in repairs? It’s a no-brainier, surely?

I'm with Adrian Flux and they offer it.

... could be marginal coverage for OP, 2 wheels/tyres, struts ...
can't see that they have a puncture option too, which maybe more frequent issue (hopefully cheaper than that offered by tyre sellers too)
Our pothole damage insurance:

  • Costs just £59.99 a year
  • Covers up to £1,500 in damages
  • Protects alloy wheels, suspension and tyres damage
  • Protects your NCB
  • Claim hotline is open 24 hours a day
  • Likely to pay a lower excess
  • Excess is reimbursed to you if we’re able to recover this money from the local authority
  • Covers Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands

definitely over last couple of days of record rainfall, local puddles have masked a lot of the holes ... any WAZE tagging of the OP's one.
my highway report got closed
Reported:04/11/2022Closed:18/11/2022Closure Reason:Not at intervention level
surface is subsiding which is creating dangerous ruts parallel to road

Insurance will still repair from pothole damage. £50 a year extra is a 25% hike on my premiums.

I once destroyed an alloy on a pothole. You live and learn and with experience learn to avoid them.

Stick to the middle of the road, keep your Witt's about you on junctions and exit ramps. If there is an odd shaped puddle in the road it is a pot hole etc. Haven't hit another one since.

Declaring it for the required 5 years = £250.
Not declaring to save money on your insurance premiums = £thousands.

I never understood the reluctance to use insurance when the sums look like the above. So many people avoid claiming and fork out a small fortune to save themselves relative pocket change.

So got stuck for 7 hours on side of motorway in freezing conditions with heavily pregnant wife and mother in law who had to get back to grandma in law for who she cares for and can’t go toilet or get out of chair on her own etc. I ran out of medication…

RAC messed us around for 7 hours.

The RAC did something similar with my other half, tyre in shreds after hitting something. She was waiting for hours in -5C temps late at night on her own. I got to her before they did and I was 100 miles away! By the time I got there a kind gent and his son had already stopped and swapped the spare over. Complained to the RAC but the sorry letter was so full of crap I couldn't wipe my backside with it if I wanted to.

Pot hole insurance from what I have read is like window cover. It is an extra cover that you pay but doesn't effect your claims if you need to use it. If your car gets serious damage from a pothole insurance will still pay out even if you do not have the cover. You just lose 2 years no claims. If you have a lot of NCD it really isn't needed. The claim will be neglible to increased insurance anyway if you have decent NCD. It is basically a scam and would never option it unless it was free.

I use fixmystreet to report road issues, well and other things

Each time they say please use our website instead

I prefer fix my street, its logged when it was reported, cant be accidentally "lost" by the council
Also stops them rejecting "too small to be an issue" potholes that end up as monsters soon after (which they did when I used their site the first time)

Did the same with pot holes on the road outside my house. Was fixed within 3 months!

Positive outcome.

Welcome break agreed to pay all costs without fuss.

Awaiting for rac to reimburse all their stuff as they agreed though as they said it would take 28 days….

However..Tyre shop damaged my alloy when replacing tyres so luckily I had photos of car as it arrived at my house from recovery (mobile tyre replacement at home after other stuff was repaired) Now to claim this back…
