Pound Hound Van Halen

Theres a lot of keyboards on that album, so its hardly to say that Hagar was the root of that. Eddie just went back to what he had started out on, the keyboards. Once the crazy influence of DLR was gone so EVH was free to widdle and be a bit more self indulgent. He also didn't have to compete with DLR stage presence which was HUGE, so he took a step backwards, and the rest of the band took a step forward. Quitarwise he started to say less with more. Basically he widdled. Never a good thing.

Thats another sign you see in quitar shops. No widdling. :D

That is so unfair.
I was exactly 20 when the first album hit the shops and we rockers had never heard anything like it.
This truly was the first guitarist since Hendrix to make young lads go out and buy guitars.
On that first British tour with Black Sabbath I was at the front and everytime he went into a little widdle he would turn his back to the audience so you couldn't see how he did it and you had to go home and guess.
Obviously it wasn't too long before the secret was revealed and everybody jumped on the bandwagon. Even I could do it, not as good as him but close.

Of course, during the mid 80's any guitarist worth his salt could emulate Eddie at the drop of a hat and I suppose he knew this and decided to spend more time on the keyboard since he'd now got nothing to show the world.

I meant he widdled after DLR left compared to his playing before that. Did you hear the last album? Brutal. I bought it then gave it away I was so dissappointed.

The first Van Halen album didn't have a duff song on it but all the albums after had 2 or 3 great songs and a lot of fillers. It was hard to play their albums right through without moving the arm forward to the next track. Same with Thin Lizzy - loads of fillers. I was at the Black Sabbath/Van Halen gig at Viccy Hall and it was superb. I can even remember the crowd applausing the roadies although I was on the bog.

dmpoole, is that really you playing the keyboards on that track?
Its about time you put them in your band.

Its all me but it isn't one take. I did a lot of punching in and also slowed the track down to do it:D
Also did the same with the guitar solo. Just shows what you can do in a studio.

Hell will freeze over before keyboards appear in my band but I still joke with the band that I'm bringing them. 'Hell freezes over' - now where did I hear that quote before?
