powder coat

Assuming the OP is working, and he's on the average wage of about £26,000PA he earns roughly £12.60 per hour, of which he gets to keep about £9/hour.

Whilst your logic is undeniable, the majority on here (I would assume) would customise a case as a hobby. How much do you get paid whilst not at work?

I, personally, would like to try the spraypainting route, as it's something I could try myself. This, however, is outweighed by the fact that I'd almost certainly get a better finish if it was done by a professional.

That would be almost certainly the case whether it was spraypainted (correct paint obviously) or powdercoated.

I've also recently picked up a leaflet on home powdercoating, so I might look into that. Need an oven though, and can't use one that's used for food.

this is wha tmy case cost me:
Silverstone TJ07 with window 1 £230.99
Splash Anodising 1 £75.00
Black Powdercoat internally 1 £60.00
Triple Rad fitment lower chamber 1 £15.00
Double Rad fitment in roof 1 £15.00
Laser Cut 1 £40.00
Res mounts 1 £15.00

Total £450.99

I'm afraid I own the company so I'm always at work and I get ludicrously little for what I do...

Absolutely, I have a £9000 hydraulic lift in my garage so I can work on my historic rally car myself, but I don't try and fool myself that a) I'm any good at it or b) It's cheaper than getting a mechanic to do it.

Agreed, see above.

That's not going to be £30 from the bloke down at the blacksmiths then is it? And the oven needs to be big enough to put a case chassis in. That could get pricey.

I understand 100% about the hobby bit, but if you've just shelled out £150 on a new Lian Li or Silverstone case then a bit of DIY enamel painting is highly unlikely to make you happy long-term. I certainly do not believe it will save you money.

I think I've seen pictures of it, and it's worth every penny!

I dunno about the bit in red. I think a lot of satisfaction could be had by spraypainting your own case. As to whether you'd save any money, I think you're 100% correct, especially if you were to invest in the gear to enable you to do a decent job.

As an aside, I don't think I'd attempt to customise a new case when there are loads available 2nd hand, at probably half the new price. You can normally find what you're looking for, or close to it.

I do agree, completely, that getting a professional to powdercoat for you is the most logical thing to do, and will provide an excellent finish.

But, (and it's a big but) what price that satisfaction? For everything else there's Mastercard. :D

Thanks :)
Although if it wasnt for my "dream rig" I wouldnt ever shell out that much for a case, it was hard enough to convince myself to buy the case that much, let alone the mods lol

Not down the blacksmiths in a little village in Suffolk - plastic cards melt in the heat apparently and cash only just makes it to his pocket before his wife burns through it:D

understand this, all of us are wasting our money...... because building gaming rigs is a luxury...it's a total waste of money...PERIOD...no ifs and buts about it...........enough said :cool:

spray painting your own case really well, will make you smile from ear to ear...a huge sense of satisfaction ;)..... but you'd need to practice first, i would say to anybody have a go..... but watch out for paint runs/ dirt and good preparation.

i keep reading on the web about painting pc cases and i totally disagree with most of it....

you need to do all the rubbing down/ preparation.......BEFORE you spray the gloss on. .........when i used to spray model custom cars/ model aircraft/ and later radio controlled 50'' tugboats.....i could always get a perfect finish with an air brush!

an air brush will not create paint runs easily...it goes on like a fine mist but a large car aerosol can definitely will... it kicks out way too much ``watery `` paint and it can spit like crazy too....it's hard to control and very temperamental..

they have to do all this rubbing down afterwards/ polishing etc.....because they're using an aerosol can, the Air brush will give you a far flatter/ much higher quality finish..........the difference in quality is utterly enormous.....

you can get a good cheap air brush``Humbrol`` or similar, for about 12 to 20 quid....you'll need a compressor too, or a spare car tyre/ can of air.

the only problem i'll have using an air brush is...................keeping dirt out of the paint while it's drying, but choose the right colour and you'll not notice it

As someone currently painting a case and its assorted bits with cheap spray enamel paint with absolutely no prior experience of this kind of thing at all, I figure I'll post my input.

Yes the cans are hard to work with. You have to shake them very thoroughly beforehand and spray a little at a time and build up to the coverage you want.

As for the quality - the finish I'm getting is much better than the finish that was on the Antec 300 when it arrived, and much better than I expected to be honest. The most difficult parts are plastic.

Is it as good as powder coating? Probably not but I don't really care about that. I'm doing this as a hobby for enjoyment and where's the fun in getting someone else to do it all? If I wanted that I'd just buy the Antec 902 or Dragonlord K62 or something else 'pre-modded'.

just been quoted £15/£20 for a shotblasted, powder coated case over here in Belfast
Contact details please mate, belfast is a lot more handier for me as opposed to sending it off to england, all i need done is three case panels in white.
